Show ACCIDENT it f int three men instantly killed tills morning and a fourth injured so badly that he dies at the ogden hospital at p m by explosion ol 01 a helper engine at about this morning a fearful railroad accident occurred on the west side of the promontory mountains on what is known as lake hill about G miles west of ogden resulting in the immediate three men and the fatal injury of a fourth the accident was caused by alic explosion of engine 2618 one of the large new compound engines used as a helper at the steep grades at promontory the engine was acting aa helper on freight train cast bound and was ahead of the other engine on it were engineer A A wilton brakeman E A fireman L L munsey and a kramr whose name is unknown alic explosion came without warning and created deadly havoc the upper part of the locomotive and the tender were shattered and blown in every di ruction large masses being found at a distance of fifty feet from the track engineer wilton E A uphoff and alio tramp were killed almost instantly and their bodies were horribly scalded the fireman L L munsey was found with his leg badly shattered pcr part of his body and hh scalded lie was still alive however and an effort was made to put him on the first section ofis 0 6 but ane crowded condition of the train wa such that he be brought in A second run in with fhe injured man andric and tic bo Jica of the dead arriving here al 8 30 af first section the bodies of uphoff and of the unknown man were taken to undertaking parlors and the remains of wilton were taken to larkin sons undertaking i establishment the injured man L L munsey was taken to the hospital but it is thought he will not survive his injuries the accident delayed frallic only about two hours The running gear of the engine was not thrown from the track W A wilton the engineer who was killed is well known in ogden he was about 30 theara of age and married and has a wife and two children living in ogdan his cifes maiden name was miss may biddle and her father is a well known employed in the S P shops brakhman E A uphoff was a brother of wm C uphoff the well known commissary agent for the southern pacific at this point alie deceased was 20 years old and was unmarried the tramp whose name is unknown was about 40 years of age and sandy leaving u full aandy beard the injured fireman L L munsey was living with his parents his father being an employed of the southern pacific at promontory LATER L L munsey the injured man died as a result of his injuries at p m |
