Show legislators WITH THE INSANE A DAYS JUNKETING OVER THE RIO GRANDE the utah legislators visited the insane asylum at provo yesterday after viewing the insane patients in which they are confined the legislators were given a banquet the end of the inspection was welcome and the guests repaired to the chapel where under gorgeous decora alons four long tables were laden with a bounteous repast president ayans eat at the head of the first table pov wells at the glasmann at the third and mayor taylor at the last dr hardy bade the guests welcome and mayor taylor pronounced grace after the good things were apar taken of dr hardy explained the needs of the institution he said that there were accommodations for patients and that there were sow in confinement they would continue to come and more room must be had the additional wings as originally planned would cost but if they could not ibe had fourteen room cottages would to fee built to accommodate twenty five or thirty patients each and the ventilating plant of the present structure would have to be completed the cost of improvements would be he said about he explained the crowded condition but said that the health of the patients was better the death rate decreased and the discharge rate increased gov wells then spoke briefly in favor of granting the request of the institution and president evans followed in a sympathetic strain discussing the condition of the inmates and declaring that the legislature must do all in its power to extend the conveniences of the asylum while bearing in mind the needa of other institutions and the condition of ane states finances expressed the conviction that the number of inmates must be reduced or the additions enlarged dr hardy had suggested that some of the inmates were properly charges of county infirmaries Infirm aries senator thomas complimented the management of the asylum and said a pleasant word tor the young ladies who were making athe visit enjoyable representative johnson one of the utah county members said that the insel should bo given all it asked tor and senator with an eloquent comment upon the condition of the unfortunates declared that the asylum deserved the support of the legislature representative eph homer who in private life Is engineer ot the asylum spoke from the point of one thoroughly conversant with every need of the institution and the speaking waa concluded by dr fred taylor city physician of provo who discussed professionally the result in overcrowding in the wards during the luncheon the provo opera house orchestra discoursed sweet music |
