Show AH UNTIMELY BEATH charles beuglas commits suicide by means of carbolic acid the rash act of the young man is a surprise to his friends and a great shock tc his relatives his mother is prostrate with grief at 5 last evening charles W douglas was found by his mother in his room at her resl denice dead rein the effects of swallowing the contents of a bottle of carbolic add the news spread rapidly and for sometime there were many reports circulating cu as to the details of the affair As traced today the particulars are as follows young douglas had been working tor about elx weeks past for the firm of Basl lard and ludmir the butchers on street the capacity of delivery driver and collector yesterday forenoon he attended to bis work as usual and during dihe forenoon he as near as the firm can 15 at 1220 he was sent to the reed to deliver some meat and he then put up the horse and delivery outfit and started for home to get lunch on his way he stopped at the gambling room known as the silver club on street and according to statements made by friends later was seen at that place about one engaged in a game it Is thought that he here lost the money which he had collected for ahls employers during the forenoon for when bis body was discovered no money was found in the clothing after leaving the gambling rooms he stopped at carrs drug store and bought awen ty five cents worth of carbolic add which he said oie was going to use in treating a sick horse this was about p m and abort ly afterward he rea chedi home ats mother noticed nothing unusual in bis demeanor his iffet bad become very wet during ahls work ln the forenoon and he sat down before the fire arid changed his shoes and barmad bhim seif he then ate lunch and retired to his room as was Ms usual custom his that he should arise early and work long hours and he generally seized an opportunity atter lunch each day to take a short nap hiis mother was going to a reception and she instructed ted him when ahe went out to lock the door and conceal the key at a certain spot when she returned from her call at 5 iho found the door locked but the key was not where she had designated her daughter geo B smyth was with her and she got a little nephew to climb in at a window and open the doors upon gaining entrance mrs douglas went immediately to charlies room and made the horrifying discovery the body was still warm denoting that the act was just committed as a whole ounce cf the poison was used and death must have abeen linsman taneo usHe lay on his side the handa clasped under the cheek the mouth partly open as if he was about tc speak and a calm peaceful jook on the face which was not burned or disfigured by the acid the pillow was damp with perspiration which still clung to the face friends were notified and later undertaker took charge of the remains the mother was prostrated with grief and Is confined to her room today ill from the shock county attorney halverson did not think it was necessary to hold an inquest last evening but precinct justice hall was at the residence this morning tor that purpose finally upon earnest request on the part of relatives of the deceased the justice decided that no inquest was necessary the funeral will be held at 2 tomorrow afternoon from the family residence at twenty sixth street the time of the funeral was fixed at that date in order that certain speakers wham the family wished could be present and they could only come tomorrow vr monday in order to hold the funeral monday it would have been necessary to embalm the body which mrs douglas did not desire friends can view the remains between 11 and 1230 tomorrow charles W dougalas Doug the deceased was only 27 years old having been born on october 19 1873 he was well known in ogden and was of an open generous impulsive nature very affectionate and very fond of his mother it is believed that the cause of his rash act was the affection and respert he had for her and that he imagined he was disgracing her by his habat of which was almost his only fault he had many friends an ogden among his companions and he possessed the confidence of the firm for which he was employed although he tead been working for them only a short ioime ills act la to be regretted and his mother and other relatives have the sympathy of the people in this chour of grief |
