Show SCHOFIELD STRIKE coal miners ot the cam decide to quit work scofield utah jan 14 at a of miners from winter quarters mm held in the I 1 0 0 F hall yesterday morning the report of tho committee appointed to present the demands to the pleasant valley coal company reported as follows from W G sharp general manager answering your communication of the jtb in which you advise us that the employed emp loyes of the winter quarters mine ask for the following advances first the company to take 30 per pent off and pay 65 cents per ton tor run of mine athla would be an advance ot 31 per cent second fifty cents per yard advance for driving entries this would be an advance of 25 to 33 per cent third twenty alve cents per day advance for all persons employed un this would be an advance of 9 and 10 per cent fourth for three chock one for no 4 and two tor no 1 mine the company to deduct from the miners for the payment of check welsh men REQUESTS answer none of the requests for advance can be granted partly tor the reason that miners in the mines in asater quarters are making as much la eight hours as Is being earned in ten hours in the mines ot our competitors in wyoming but chiefly for the reason that the winter quarters mines are working on large contracts at very low prices and based on the present scale of wages for his last reason we are not in a position to make aay advance in wages and would oe obliged to let large contracts go to car competitor a rather than to make any advance after mr sharps letter was read the miners decided that the demands were too sweeping and began to frame a new set which was presented to sir sharp by the committee this afternoon as follows we the undersigner undersigned under signed employed emp loyes of the pleasant valley coal company in mass meeting assembled do demand the following first we demand an advance of 10 cents per ten for all coal mined second that an advance of 10 cents par day bo granted to all laborers employed at winter quarters mines third that an advance of 25 cents per yard be granted tor driving entries and in all yardage work and further that our committee Is hereby empowered to state in case this is not granted that the men will not go to work and will go on a strike this was adopted unanimously and the committee was named as follows pat rooney george lewis bert andrew smith john bell john samuels and robert walker this committee presented the miners proposal to manager sharp late in the afternoon and pursuant to their instructions from the main body of the miners demanded a reply immediately dia tely mr sharp explained to the committee that no action would be taken or an kaswer given until time was had to consider the requests and suggested that a definite response be given wednesday the committee expressed satisfaction with suggestion at the meeting members of the committee after submitting their report urged the assembled miners to defer action until wednesday A stormy debate followed in which the committee was strongly condemned by the radical strike agitators for leaving the company officials time to confer while the more conservative of the miners insisted that they were unwilling to be identified with the movement if no consideration was to be given the tights of the company during his discussion nearly all of the employed emp loyes ot the company stood with the committee but the strike promoters were strong and bedlam prevailed for about two hours during which time a strong effort was made to force an immediate this sentiment eventually prevailed and at 10 a major portion of the men assembled carried a motion to strike and the strike was accordingly declared |
