Show participate three sessions of teachers association in salt lake yesterday at the afternoon session athletics and high school commencements were dif aused t length ogden teachers taking the lead three sessions of the state teach cers association were held in the assembly ball at salt lake yesterday during the morning session the time was given up principally to the discussion of two papers one entitled to what extent Is instruction in english in the commma schools defective and one on technical grammar ia its relation to language the discussion of these subjects was gal 2 teachers in session ed almost entirely members ot the association from salt lake and weber counties at the afternoon session principal george A baton of the salt lake high school formerly of the ogden nigh school led the secondary department meeting the subjects discussed were the use and abuse of athletics and should the high school commencement be abolished mr baton opened the former by saying athletics gave wholesome exercise especially in the absence of a gymnasium engendered a school spirit furnished a medium of advertisement and a common plane of interest prof byron cummings of the university of utah thought athletics gave an opportunity to work off superfluous energy and natural animal combativeness and should be recognized as an educational means remarks along the same line were also made by other members of the association and one of the participants then introduced gs following resolution which was unanimously adopted resolved that it be the sentiment of this department that a represents alve of each secondary and higher in in the state be invited to meet at the state university in conference to settle upon some general plan tor the encouragement and regulation of athletic sports mr baton then introduced the question ol 01 high school commencements saying that as a rule they ought to be abandoned A B allson principal of tho ogden high school took the opposite side of the question miss moffat of the ogden high school said a pupil could not prepare a sufficiently good paper alone to present at a commencement and she did not believe in teaching a pupil evils of plagiarism for four years and then helping them to commit that very crime the question was thoroughly discussed but no formal action was taken in aho matter PAPER BY MISS SMITH the grammar department was conducted by mrs J M of ogden alms and methods of history teaching and to extent is the speer aca of arithmetic applicable to grammar schools being considered the discussion on the first matter was opened by a ten minute paper given by miss smith of ogden and a debate on whether textbooks text books should be used followed prof engle of logan favored their use while prof roylance opposed it miss ot salt lake and mrs bishop also took prominent parts in the discussion the discussion of speer was opened by principal wallace of the union school of salt lake others who spoke on the subject were D el adams of ogden prof stewart plot martin of the salt lake high principal halleck and mrs T W bliss ot the union school |
