pours the southern pacific train wrecked a mile and a half out of elko yesterday morning arrived in ogden shortly after ten this morning no 3 was reported in this morning in two sections the first to arrive at and the second at it was almost ten before the first section sot in and about fifteen minutes later when the last arrived the second section brought in pas from the elko wreck and upon its arrival all was bustle and excitement the railroad officials were busy looking after the interests ot the injured people and had dr perkins at the station to render what assistance could be rendered and to exam ano the condition ot the injured As the passengers filed out of the cars with their heads lied up their arms in slings and limped into the waiting room they presented a woeful expression and looked as though they did not want to repeat the experience the train was running at the rate of forty miles an leour when the acal dent occurred something just what will probably never be known threw the postal car from the rails A first class coach followed the postal car and a second class coach came next these two cars crowded the end of the postal car around until it stood almost at tight angles with the track tipped at an angle of about forty five the wheels of one side standing in the air and those of the opposite side bur bcd in the ground the two coaches kept their position uptight up tight but were abbout feet from the track while three tourist cars lay along side the arack flat on their sides and a fourth tourist was tilted at an angle of forty alve degrees the pullman car the last one of the trin remained on the track and right side up and on the rails this and a front car next to the engine were the only ones left on the track in the wreck the postal car was broken loose from the fruit car and in a snap shot photograph taken of the wreck it is shown standing next to the some distance ahead ot the rest of the detached train the track was a complete wreck the bics tics being chopped into kindling wood and the rail on the east side for the entire length of the train torn loose the first intimation anyone bad of the wreck was when the cars commenced bumping along on the ties then there was a wild scramble and passengers grasped frantically for anything to give them support while some tell onto the floor ot the cars and held onto the scabs scats tor dear life that more were not injured seema miraculous and that none was killed la a phenon menon As soon as the motion of llie train ceased the scramble for exit began and those first out helped the injured to wrape from their imprisonment word was taken into elko of the wreck and the two elko physicians went to the acene to render what aid flioy could citizens in carriages also went and hauled the passengers into town the engine ot the train one of the large type no 1433 was taken into he elko yards and juat as it was going past a switch it jumped the track and aay helpless until another en alne came up from wells and helped it on the injured were mrs C lawson of grass valley california wounded scalp and severe nervous shock frank cleland san francisco hip hurt and mrs cleland head cut tor about two inches and a bruised hip mrs E II assel pacific grove california bruised about the body and neck wrenched nelson moore butte shoulder hurt left eye bruised and knee cap hurt an old gentleman named sedgwick from butte hurt in stomach mrs M S endress coloma california head cut and left arm bruised john molan san francisco arm cut and bruised E D armstrong butte face bruised J D froim oakland knee hurt james barnett milwaukee leg cut and neck bruised E F whiting san bernardino arm cut and badly shaken up miss marian san francisco left hip bruised jno W grant postal clerk foot cut wrist sprained and hurt in chest wm wesley postal clerk injured C A lynch porter of pullman car right leg badly wrenched and bruised postal clerks grant and wesley were maln back to sacramento on no 2 and mrs lawson was brought to ogden and taken to the hospital the people of elko treated the passengers with the utmost consideration and the railroad people did everything in their power to make the injured comfortable mr conners who was with the cleland party blames the company charging them with tolerating rotten ties and using small rails we never want another such experience cars and some indians on the blind baggage neither of whom was hurt the elko baseball team were on the just preparing to leave the car when the accident occurred the old butto miner who was hurt in the stomach gave a single groan and gave himself up tor dead until he was pulled out by the rescuers the accident was one that no one seems able to account tor and for which no one seems to be responsible the injured passengers were held in ogden during the day and superintendent nobles office was busy interviewing them and ascertaining their injuries and the probable expense of settlement tl the passengers say the officials were very fair in their propositions ot settlement and the standard reporter was informed that settlements were effected in a of cases some of the cars that came in on no 3 were taken to the shops for repairs one tourist car was set on fire by cinders during the trip the first anyone knew of this was the car filled with smoke and water bad to be used to quench the fire which was on the window ledge outside THE WRECK OF NO 3 no 3 pulled out of san francisco in he evening of july ath and stopped at port costa prior to crossing the river it had not stopped more than one minute when the owl train from san francisco to los angeles came along at full speed and crashed into her rear it was an awful jar said P J of san francisco who told the story to a standard man 1 I was sitting talking to the wife of captain chadwock formerly located at fort douglas when the crash came there were only three of the passengers injured and they not seriously but every piece of glassware in the buffet car was broken and the rear car was badly smashed one of the passengers who was inured in this wreck was an old lady who came on to ogden and who was taken care of by S P officials her arm was hurt but apparently not seriously gunshot gun shot wounds and powder burns cuts bruises sprain from nails insect stings and ivy poison ng quickly healed by dewitts
