Show THE BEAR RIVER CANAL to be put in first class condition by the new owner mr william garland goes up to the canal and will lay out the work of repairs some of the conditions now obtaining mr william garland 0 Ies accompanied by his attorney and bia secretary arrived in oden a few days ano aud baa since baen looking up the mattara connection with the old bear river canal which became hia property by operation op judgment secured by him some veara ago mr gariand has during the past two weeks his agent magl bihson taken entire cuarta of abd tbd line of canals and literals laterals late rals aud will now look toward the placing of in the best condition possible to standard man this morning mr garland said 23 1 I am going ap to the canal urn morning or evening I 1 will go first to collina ton aud then over to the canyon and up to abo dam from there awill follow the line ot the canal down to the Corinne lines and inspect them ull as thoroughly as possible it is my intention to learn juat to what extent abo property has depreciated precia ted during the past year I 1 understand that the receivers of the bear river company have put no improvements or repairs upon the canal for a year or more pact and that last year the canal was left in such condition that there could flow through it barely if suf water for the baad laad under water whereas the canal is of sufficient aizo sizo when in proper condition to supply water tor acres they left the canal in very bad bhame when they closed the season last year and the where we should now be at work in the cleaning are full of ice the water was not run oat of the canal and that left everything in tho worst shape which should obtain I 1 can understand euch actions as alia receivers collected all the money tor the use oe the water and canal last year but did nothing toward keeping it in condition it is my purpose to put the canal in aba best condition possible and to supply all that country with the water which it needs there Is one thing about the matter which is unfortunate however and that ia that a great many of the settlers up there havo purchased water rights from the old company when the old company had really no right to sell according to the opinions righta eold after 1891 daring the time when I 1 wad a party to the suit for foreclosure of abi bonds are invalid for tho four months after the bek mnina of the suit I 1 was a party to it but it was then dismissed as to me and from and after that date the sold by the le selver were null and void this works a hardship on the carmera and land owners up in that country that ia those who hava bought water rights under the canal since that time and the only thing they can do is to water rights and begin again whatever we can do to make it easier tor them we shall do and our contracts will be as reasonable as is possible 1 I want alie people to understand that the bear river company water eold since 1891 are not as against the present owners and that no money they may pay oa those claims will chaleo the conditions they will have no protection for any further payments they may make on the old contracts 1 I ahall be up in the bear river country several days and when I 1 return I 1 ahall be in a better position to talk on the of the sand improvements the people may be sure however that aba canal will be put in better shape than ever before and their inter esta will ba conserved the decree which gave to mr garland the control of the canal is a very sweeping one and leaves nothing of the property of the bear riar company in the way of canals literals laterals late rals water rights etc which is not the property of mr garland mr that he expected that mr lee gibeon who ha been his abent here tor many years will continue as of the canal |
