Show CENTRAL PACIFIC the san francisco papers oppose the proposed settlement ot the central pacific indebtedness to the government their objections are principally outbursts ot enmity growing out ot the senatorial contest now on in sacramento at least that is true ot the call and chronicle while the examiner has fought the railroad tor several years the coast papers are condemning the agreement entered into whereby the central pacific is to cancel its indebtedness to the government by payments aggregating and extending over a period ot ten years familiar with railroad affairs in this section and having the best interests of ogden at heart are hoping that negotiations now on will be made law and the vexatious war against the cebral pacific brought to an end we do not pretend to pass upon the exact justice ot tho compromise and somewhat lean to the belief that the railroad has tried to evade the full letter of the contract but however this may be the fact remains that ogden as the eastern terminus ot the road has suffered severely by the unsettled the affairs of tho company traffic lias been diverted to the southern pacific and a general policy ot unconcern for tho best interests of the central pacific has been in evidence tor several years apparently there will be no end to this destructive policy while the exact status ot the central pacific in its relations with government the Is undefined there seems to be but one remedy and that Is the compromise offered by those interests in control of the railroad therefore for the advancement van cement of the best interests of ogden it is to be that the final understanding der standing about to bo arrived at and that boon thereafter new life will be infused into pacific man an effort willbe will be made to 0 tain freight and passenger traffic better train service will be given and the road improved in every department As long as it Is not of advantage to those in control of the road to build up its business because of conflicting and competing ownership it la evident that nothing will be done but the moment that the abt to the government is settled the prosperity af pf the central pa p will be as eagerly sought for by its management as that same control Is now laboring to discredit it when that time comes ogden will take on new railroad activity and a larger force than even will be employed on tho central pacific in and out of this chy |
