Show RAILROAD WOMEN ARE ALARMED lady employed Emp loyes of the union pacific may be next to see the order that the northwestern has already promulgated lo 10 the he effect that all lady employed Emp loyes will be discharged A year ago the union pacific made the announcement that no more ladles ladies would be employed by that company and the labor organizations and wom ans clubs made such a protest against it that the order was waa never carried out I 1 now the northwestern road has decided to dispense with all ladles ladies in its employ so reads a dispatch relative to the recent action of the directorate of that company the samo same trouble may follow the order of the northwestern a as followed the order of the U P and they may feol feel the necessity in order to protect their business ot or rescinding rescind ing it the northwestern does not reach ogden and there are really no lady employees in this section except on the H R G W and S P but the precedent Is what the women do not want they want to be privileged to earn their living in 1 whatever vocation they may be fled tied and to shut them out of the rall road offices will create consternation among them while there are at least five times as many men in the service of the north western lines as women the discharge of eo so many women accustomed to earn their own living and having no one to E rely upon tor for their support Is regarded g as a serious problem this rule will affect the women cm ern aloyed on the chicago northwestern northwester n chicago st paul minneapolis omaha fremont Fremo nL elkhorn missouri valley the union pacific denver gulf the oregon short line utah north ern tad and the oregon railway and navigation fc company the number of wom i en employed on these various lines west of the missouri Misso url river will run into the thousands under the receivership of the union on pacific female clerks flourished and secured such a firm hold bold that the manage ment had bad difficulty in checking the evident preference for bright quick witted office girls the old management asserted frequently that they could see no reason why competent women should the same consideration in filling positions as that accorded men and the old management of that country acted upon this theory one result of this policy was to permit a large number of female telegraph operators to secure admission into the strong order of railway telegraphers grap hers bers that order Is the most powerful labor organization connected with railroads in the west one of their cardinal principals Is to prevent discrimination or unjust discharge of members of their order from their po the federal courts favored this order very materially when the union pacific was in the hands of the receivers and this gave the order increased power along the union pacific lines when their salaries were arbitrarily reduced without reference to the protest of their grievance committee they appealed to the federal court cou rt and secured the revocation of the order therefore it if that order sees fit to take exception to the new rule of the northwestern interests in the west a very animated situation may result thus tar far it has not been discussed but it undoubtedly will be one girl alice shaw has work d up from he the bottom as an operator on the union pacific and from handling the key in a nebraska dugout on a lonely stretch of track trac k near jules burg has become chief operator at cheyenne it Is unlikely that girls who have shown so go much pluck aa as Is required under such circumstances will give up under a rule like this without a struggle the rho rule against the employment of women Is said to be the result of a discussion among the northwestern managers in which purely economic questions were considered A prominent union pacific head officer asserts a that all phases of the subject were considered in detail before the the female employed emp loyes was rendered it was not disputed that women do their work just as carefully and as i thoroughly as men but the charge that prevailed was that the capacity of the average woman tor for work Is much less than that of the average man matl again I 1 tn tn their sex bars them from performing certain lines of work liable at any moment to be required of any clerk la tn the services of a great corporation for instance in the passenger department it is frequently desirable to put men thoroughly familiar with the ticket business on the road in the capacity of collectors inspectors and as aids to conductors it if a woman ha happen p to be in a position in tn the passenger department where she is thrown in the care of the tickets ehe she la Is not available for such transfer the samo same li ig true of employing a lady as a ticket agent or station agents along the lines higher positions in the service are usually filled from these those positions and of course it Is out of the question of promoting to the position of conductors train dispatchers and division superintendents the women who may oc cuny these lower positions one thing certain it Is clear that a large number of skillful female clerks operators and station agents will thus be thrown out of vocations which they have made a life study and which will now be ie of no further use to them at leapt leant unless they can find employment with other railroads |
