Show THE OLD AND NEW CITY SURVEYS city engineer parker will make some suggestion s thinks the matter should be settled once and for all some of the irregularities what the changes will mean about ten years ago when the city first came into the hands of the incoming and boom people there was a proposition pass passed sed the city council providing for a new survey of 0 the city and a correction ot of alleged inaccuracies in tho the old survey under which the city bad had been platted and under which all transfers ot of property had been made it was alleged at the time that there was as a point or more of divergence from what should have been the survey and plat and that from the cause mentioned there were some people whose lota lots were too tar far to the north and others who were not tar far enough and it was generally asserted that the whole city was mixed up on the matter and that pe the only salvation forthe for the people was to bd have a new and correct survey made and have the people change their fences and lines to conform to the new survey the survey was made under the administration of city engineer perkins ns and the changes were considerable As the lines on washington avenue could not be changed conveniently it was decided to let them stand and to correct everything above them this meant that those people owning property in the block directly east of washington avenue would not have much of a change to make as the divergence from the old lines was almost imperceptible but as the survey continued up the hill the divergence became greater until when the lines reached monroe and there was a difference of about tour four feet that is the lines of the street say street as an example were four feet north of the lines of the old or original city survey the result of this was that the people on the north side of the street must move their fences four feet back and those on the south side aide must move tour four feet into the old street somo some of those interested refused to relocate their fences and aa as a consequence there were a few suits in the courts and the final decision of the courts was that the old survey must stand during the time that the matter was in litigation the new water works plant and the electric lighting and telephone systems were either built or extended and many of the polea poles and water plugs were set under the new survey on street and above monroe avenue there are both water plugs and poles in the middle of what under the old survey urvey were the sidewalk lines and there never has been any correction of their position at this point there are some pieces of property which are fenced according to the new survey and some whose lines were never changed making a zigzag line of fence or block outline each year since the decision of the courts there has been talk of compelling the property owners to make their lines conform to the old survey but each council baa has let it go over until the present time and now the new city engineer A F parker Is planning to have the matter corrected his ideas will probably be presented to the council at their meeting tonight to one of his plans as spoken of by him recently was to allow those blocks wherein the change had been pretty generally made to the new survey to eland stand as they are ana where the change had not been made and the lines were a majority of them on the old survey to be changed entirely to the old survey the result of this would be to leave the streets zigzagged and will bring about further litigation unless the city should assume the expense of the changes |
