Show A FARMER ON TOMATOES he shows up the false statements of a utah editor some interesting figures and unique methods in handline those who juggle with figures A farmer who can see if he does raise hay and tomatoes mr editor I 1 attended a meeting of us farmers last saturday ia ogden and I 1 heard much that I 1 was heartily in sympathy with and heard and read more that I 1 was disgusted with I 1 would like through the columns of your most valuable paper to do some kicking this union or operation cooperation co of the farmers interests I 1 think is all right and eight dollars a ton for tomatoes Is also all right and I 1 would like to get more if I 1 could and thought at first that we might until I 1 investigated the matter thoroughly and I 1 have now come to the conclusion that wo went at it wrong way about in the first place when looking up this eight dollar business I 1 meet me and says I 1 ale how about eight dollars for tomatoes next summer says ale 1 I nave no money to spare says I 1 why dont you packers do as T us farmers do tell them fellows up in montana idaho wyoming and down in salt lake that it they dont pay you two dollars case for tomatoes that you wont pack them me says 1 I guess that I 1 would not get a chance to pack them at that price nor at any price 1 I could see right away where I 1 was lame the fellows at the big factory talk about the same they say that they cant control the markets and have to buy the tomatoes to conform with the price of the goods after they are packed I 1 did not see the five point fellows as I 1 made up my mind that we were unreasonable I 1 tell you what makes me pretty hot Is the insinuations by some men who would like to lead us in these efforts that we are misled mis led now I 1 think with a few figures we can plainly see who is mistaken on page 1 vol 1 no 9 of the utah home Is an article endorsed I 1 dont know the author but whoever he Is I 1 think he must have been about halt shot when he wrote it tor as ignorant a farmer as I 1 am can see that it would take more than a ton of tomatoes to fill 1000 2 lb cans for there is allowed by all packers to be on an average one pound in six for waste such as dealings pea lings loss of juice and poor tomatoes maybe this fellow was thinking of canning hay when he wrote no loss from pealing or juice now let as alg uro on the profits of this other mans business that Is the way to be prosperous I 1 believe or maybe that Is the reason some people have lost good homes and small fortunes in the last few years when the factories paid mr lowe 15 a ton tor tomatoes the packer got per case for the goods last year the packer paid G dollars or the same tomatoes and got per case now let some good mathematician figure this out and see if the factories have not kept the ratio of prices pretty closely remembering that labor and other expenses were much higher than now this looks like somebody would like to lead eh this writer also seems to be indignant because george would not talk to the committee we sent to wait upon him good reasons for george could not speak much george asked him hw hat they would grow provided they could not get the eight dollars beets bays he how many beets can you raise per acre 30 tons saya he A man cant say much when the wind Is knocked out of him farmers take that list of amounts of goods and cost of putting up the same on page 5 of the same trash to any man who has ever worked in or within a mile of a canning factory and ask him how near they arc correct I 1 guess he would be in pretty near as bad a fix as mr matson on page 9 this would be says large factories pay 23 and tor boiling respectively small and large cans per also 17 and for labeling just jn figure this up and sec what it would cost large factories for this work the tact is he Is way off A fair labeler can put labels on cases of jtb goods of 24 caas each per day which would be cans at this price this label er would make 9 per day pretty good business this labeling some hay canning I 1 am glad that we do not have to believe all we hear about being led hay canning and the like for there la nothing to hinder a fellow from figuring a little providing he Is hlll i ing A IL CLARK A farmer |
