cleverness with which he tas bas been credited the round ended with sharkey at his man second round corbett with the I 1 jett left landed lightly there was an exchange of left and right on the head in which sharkey showed the advantage jim kept trying to push his left into toms face and the sailor would tome rome right back with a swing for the tody body he ile was inclined to be a trifle wild and was frequently cautioned by his chief second tom put out a straight right on jims nose which seemed to bring the blood to that member sharkey put in a right hand band smash on the jaw which sent corbett down he lie attempted to repeat the dose but was tolled foiled as jim clinched the round closed with tom all over his man third round corbett led with his right tor for the body landing hand liand smashes on the wind fourth round the sailor was right itter after his man and essayed lefts and rights for the head landing each time corbett clinched and acted entirely on the defensive corbett led left for the head landing on the neck and sharkey barkey fl cent sent back a hard right on the body blody corbel corbett 1 then began to do some punching and jabbed his man at will tut but at long range but tom always had a counter ready corbett repeatedly led his left and damaged shar keys face considerably the sailor chased bis his opponent into the batters lat orner and received a series of jabs tor for his action fifth round corbett started right off with a left jab on the face and was apparently attern attempting pUng to tool fool with his man sharkey key however was not in a playful mood and brought his right band hand over with force enough to make jim wince jim knocked his left rather low on toma body and lifted sharkey off his feet with his shoulder corbett appeared to be a trifle weary and his blows lacked steam whereas there waa was a world of force behind Shark Shar keys cys blows sixth round corbett led for the head kead with his left landing but sharkey was right after him like a whirlwind tom started in to mix up lip and whipped in some corkers on the body corbett retaliated with like light jabs on the face and fairly forceful blows on the body midway through the round there waa was a rattling mix up both exchanging lefts and rights on the head and nd body with the sailor having a hade shade the best ot of it there were cries crie of foul foul 11 when corbett bit hit hl his ban man in a breakaway break brek away which the referee had not called the men were el inched at the bell atter after participating tn in a tory very fast mix up seventh round sharkey ran across the ring and planted left and right on the body corbett clinching corbett acted on the defensive and seemed unable to withstand Shar keys rushes the latter whipped in a beautiful left hook book on the wind and followed it up with a right on the jaw the sailor kept doing all the work and was always ready to mix it up on the slightest provocation he alternately threw over left and right on head and body occasionally sio nally changing to left hooks on the wind which were slowly but surely attending to corbetts Cor belts case it Is shar keys fight so far the pace was terrific eighth round sharkey was first to lead landing a left chop on the neck they clinched frequently end rud the referee was kept busy separating them torn tried a left chop blow which tell fell short and jim jabbed hs his left hard on the nose sharkey sent a right straight on the face which made jims head rock but jim was ready with a left hook which grazed Shar keys face both fought fast clinching repeatedly jim hooked his right hard on toms jaw halt half dazing him he ile quickly recuperated cupe rated and went back at his man hammer and tongs ninth round corbett landed with his tits left tom went right back at the same moment clinches were frequent and the men refused to break together corbett then struck tom rather low on the body and the sailor app appealed caled to the referee corbett shoved tom from him and said oh you go away the men were in the center of the ring mixing it up in the liveliest manner called to tom not to mind corbetts low hitting just at this moment for some unaccountable reason mcvey mevey one of corbetts seconds jumped through the ropes protesting that sharkey bad had done something wrong to corbett the moment mcvey climbed through the ropes inspector mclaughlin ln grabbed hold of him while the crowd frantically yelled foul foul corbett loses look at bis his second in the ring referee kelly seemed to pay no attention to the matter but kept looking at the fighters who continued their aggressive gres sive work mcvey mevey tried to pull away from the inspector while the spectators kept yelling at the referee who finally separated the fighters and ordered them to their corners comers corbett seemed not to understand why the referee should interfere and protested but kelly was obdurate and stopped it IL meanwhile the spectators stood up and yelled that bets should be declared off as they believed mcvey committed a breach of ring rules premeditatedly ly it looked tor for awhile as it a riot would ensue but aa as soon as the referee declared sharkey the winner on the technicality he announced all bets off as mckeys action was undoubtedly prearranged As soon aa as this announcement was made the spectators resumed their seats and awaited the departure odthe of the men from the ring REFEREE KELLYS STATEMENT john kelly the referee made the following statement 1 I stopped the bout and gave the decision to sharkey because mcvey one of 0 corbetts seconds in violation of the rules jumped into the ring 1 I called off all bets because I 1 believe the action of mcvey was paid for by somebody who bad had bet tet on sharkey and I 1 did not propose to decide public money on a palpable fake I 1 would not be a party to such a fraud no one can tell me mcvey lost his head he lie has been behind fighters tor for years and there was some fraudulent deal behind his movements so far as I 1 can see the fligh fighters were on about even terms when I 1 stopped the bout in the ninth round WHAT SAYS con mcvey eald said 1 I jumped into the ring because I 1 saw sharkey hitting in almost every clinch and sometimes so low that anybody ought to have been able to see it I 1 called out to the referee time after time in the last lut round and then I 1 could stand it no longer and stuck my head through the ropes but kelly did not see me then I 1 saw sharkey hit jim in another clinch I 1 guess I 1 lost my head and put my toot foot over the rope when they gave the fight to sharkey 1 I am sorry that I 1 am the cause of the decision being given against cor bett betl he lie would have won with a certainty he lie had sharkey whipped but I 1 could not stand seeing jim get fouled without making a protest HAS BEEN TALKS jim corbett said 1 I think that those who saw the fight will agree that I 1 had sharkey whipped and would have had the decision in another round or two I 1 did not want to win a fight on a foul and it was my misfortune that mcvey jumped into the ring to call the referees attention to Shar keys foul fighting he did fight foul he ile hit me low once in the second round and again in the seventh I 1 did not see mcvey jump into the ring my back was turned to him and when kelly said you win I 1 thought he meant me because I 1 knew I 1 had way the best of it atter after I 1 realized that the decision was against me I 1 offered to fight light it out with him then and there but tie lie walked away I 1 did too much drawing out I 1 ought to have gone right after my man and whipped him in tour four rounds well I 1 cannot kick I 1 only hope next time the other mans second will jump into the ring I 1 will leave the decision to those who saw the fight SHARKEY HEARD FROM tom sharkey heard from 1 I regret that corbetts second got into the ring for in a few more ro rounds ands perhaps the next I 1 would have put him out I 1 fought fair corbett struck too low once or twice and I 1 am a little sore below the belt now not a blow that was delivered hurt me I 1 am just out of the bathtub and as you see I 1 have not riot a scratch or mark on me 1 I believe I 1 can whip corbett or any one else and I 1 stand ready to fight him or anybody in the world fitzsimmons pre preferred feed I 1 agreed to his articles and obeyed implicitly es instructions corbetta corbetts cleverness counted tor for nothing they say that I 1 am not clever and that I 1 fought foul and that I 1 lost my head but here I 1 stand tonight without ever having lost a fight on a foul and I 1 have stood corbett off with all his much vaunted cleverness for eight rounds without a scratch on me I 1 can best any man in the world and will make good my words whenever I 1 get into the ring |
