magnificent presentation of the issues of the campaign the most magnificent meeting ever witnessed in n of ogden in any tampa campaign ign was the meeting odthe re publicans public ans in the grand opera house last night the people crowded in i from 7 and by 8 the i largest crowd seen there this campaign was cheering the array of republican giants on the stage as the curtain rose the stage was elegantly decorated and among those seated there were hon lion alma eldredge john henry smith john col isaac trumbo maj M A breeden L R rogers john S houtz B D F thomas A W agee E W wade attorney general bishop chas hollingsworth edwin dix W F adams E if allison J H mccoy L J holther W G smith jos streng W V williams thos mercer L B adams and many others together with a large number of ladles ladies from the first word by charman hansen in calling the meeting to order there was a continuous round of applause at every good point made imade by the speakers and they were innumerable there never was such a display of enthusiasm exhibited at a political meeting in ogden and the air was full ot of republicanism the crowd cheered and cheered at the mention of the names and acts of f prominent republicans and the lican party and the ladles glee club composed of misses evelyn and elea nor hendershot and misses lillie mccoy and anna jaynes took the house by storm it was a scene never to ue le forgotten by the people of ogden and lind marks a red letter day in republicanism in ogden weber county and utah county chairman hanson called the thi ine meeting eting to order and speaking of the ear near approach of the end of the campaign predicted the success of the republican lican party in this fight the applause waa was wild at this claim of success and before it had subsided be he introduced hon E it allison as ag chairman tor for the evening the andl i ence went wild at this announcement because they saw that mr allison was again in line with the great can party mr allison said I 1 am deeply affected by the honor be sewed upon me in being called upon I 1 i to preside over this magnificent andl i ence once of republicans A great many of my friends have asked me within the past few days where I 1 was at and I 1 am happy to say that I 1 am now as I 1 have always been with the republicans of weber county I 1 voted tor for mr bryan in eighteen hundred and ninety six but I 1 am nevertheless very glad that william mckinley was elected president of the united states I 1 desire to assure assure my friends the silver republic cans that after giving this question thorough consideration I 1 havo have decided that I 1 could not support any ticket that tha t i was not composed of republicans As a sincere believer in the cause of tree free silver I 1 believe that its ultimate ultima tI success lies within the republican party I 1 feel sure that the democratic par ty is not a true friend of enver simer but la Is only using the just cause of silver as f an issue a bobby horse on which to ride into office here the speaker read from the salt laks lake herald an editorial published on june inne 20 1890 1896 in which tha the paper stat ed the following aside from the of free silver giver it la is the only policy left toabe democratic party in which it can go before the country with any assurance ot of winning the same editorial continues the democratic party must take up the cause of free silver siler it if it would have an issue with which it can go before the people otherwise it might aswell ell have no ticket at all in the field the cry of free silver of the democratic party Is not as I 1 have before said a sincere pica plea to the people but is simply used by that party as a vote getting device the republican party of utah is pledged to the cause of free silver and the candidates of that party stand upon the platform the hon alma eldredge whom it has been my pleasure to know for or twenty years I 1 know to be an honest man and a friend of tree free silver and will vote and work for silver it if elected and I 1 urge upon every republican to vote alma eldredge at the head of the ticket and to continue on and vote tor for the legislative and county ticket and for every republican on the ticket and not to scratch the ballot the democrats Demo crata stand for free rade and in eighteen hundred and ninety five rive made their campaign in this state by asking who is afraid of free wool and their question was answered at the polls by a republican majority and the same old democratic party should be answered on next election by the same republican majority I 1 beseech all my silver republican friends in weber county not to be deceived misled or decoyed decayed into voting for democrats un derany alias nom de plume or fusion name of any de sc whether it Is a pistol or a cannon I 1 ask you to vote as I 1 shall vote on tuesday next that Is the republican ticket straight from top to bottom tremendous applause at the close of bis his speech the ladies ladles glee club of the womans comans republican club sang COL ISAAC TRUMBO 8 SPEECH col isaac trumbo wag was introduced as one having the interests of the party always at heart he ile said in times of depression and public misfortune I 1 do not question the right of a democrat or a populist to fish some strange theory of government from out the waste basket of political economy but I 1 am inclined to question the motives and strongly doubt the loyalty and the wisdom of the american citizen who stubbornly turning his face against the truth refuses to acknowledge this nations unquestioned prosperity simply because it has been brought about against his by the wisdom of a rival political party there never was a better time for straying republicans to come back into the familiar fold there never was a better time for populists lists to concede that the great principles of republicanism are framed tor for the nations beet best interests and there never was a better time tor for democrats to purity purify their own party by abandoning until it has settled back to borne some honest principles that do not threaten the integrity and very existence of our nation there never was a better time than this for american statesmen to be thoroughly american not in this generation have the american people been in a mood BO so fraternal and so marked by good feeling and generous affection the horrid and unnatural line of sectionalism has been thrown down I 1 hope forever the last vestige of sectional bittern bitterness ess has been wiped out of existence as completely as dewey obliterated the spanish fleet and he be stands today as an a brother american with one hope one thought one purpose the in ing g and permanent advancement of 0 the welfare of the nation that god has ever permitted to exist upon this earth to the democrat and to the populist I 1 would maya bay that president presidents me J i itaf kinley linley Is your president as well as ours the flag that now floats over hawaii and over manila Is my flag as well as yours the peace commission that Is now at its labors in paris parts Is serving you as well as serving me we who have stayed home have a duty to perform quite as sacred and quite as necessary as that which belongs to our boys in blue on the field of battle they cannot refuse to char charge ge the enemy because the administration la is republican Dub lican they cannot refuse to sustain the government and we who are left acre here at home cannot and must not t be derelict in our duty we cannot and must not put this state on record in opposition to the administration that has now in hand the settlement of the terms of peace which are quite as important as the war itself we must buckle on our armor and stand by the man at the helm we have demonstrated to the world that as soldiers there are no democrats no populists lists no republicans and we must also show them that as citizens we stand by the chief executive and tho the great commander of our army and navy no matter what his politics may be no matter our politics may be 1 this is the doctrine that will govern the conduct of the noblest type of american citizens on next election day we will vote as americans not as partisans and we shall demonstrate to all the world despite the of party pride or prejudice weare abo above all things in the world american that we are true to our country and its flag and willing nay inore more than willing eager to sustain our administration and justify this war in the eyes of all the world no man can look at the flag of his country today without seeing in it new light and a new beauty new hopes and new promises of mankind and it spans the coming ages of the future as the rainbow spans the retreating storm as the sun Is setting sot ting with a bow of bright and beautiful promise hut but unlike the rainbow that shall cease to shine when tho the drought ceases the rainbow of the american people shall stand eternal fixed in heaven until this heaven shall be rolled away as a scroll and the elements at last shall melt in fervent heat in speaking of the present fight he said what a spectacle it was for frank cannon in his speech in san pete to bo be condemning the republican party and supporting the democracy after having been placed in his present exalted position by the republican party and republican votes following mr trumbo mr john P meakin sang in recitative style the sword of bunker hill and to a libarty hearty encore responded with the dandy fifth by request HON ALMA ELDREDGE republican candidate tor for congress was presented and was warmly received he ile spoke aa as follows chairman ladles and gentlemen it affords me much pleasure to meet vilta so many citizens of the city of ogden this evening for the purpose of considering some of the issues of the day however I 1 regret that my voice Is somewhat impaired by travel over a long distance of country and rough roads and during a greater part of the time speaking in the meantime therefore I 1 trust that I 1 will have the kind consideration of the audience we have met this evening tor for the purpose of considering questions that are vital in the interest of the people of the state of utah on tuesday next the people of this state are to determine whether they favor the policies inaugurated by the democratic party relative unto governmental affairs or whether they favor the policy of the republican party it would be necessary in order for us to come to a just conclusion along these lines to review perhaps briefly the dividing abne betwixt thee theve two parties relative to some of the issues of the day and I 1 wish to eay say to my hearers that to know a thing Is not sufficient the term may perhaps seem rather singular at the first thought but when we como come to investigate will readily como come to tho the conclusion I 1 believe that the assertion Is to one that will bear out along the line of facia facts it Is possible for people to come to a conclusion and still that conclusion be erroneous our democratic friends favor what Is termed the tariff for revenue only locally a tariff of reform it ta is true that many of the speakers ot of t tho he opposing party allege that the tariff is not a question in this campaign that it la is an issue but speakers upon the republican cad tigue doubt sued such a declaration because we do not believe that the speaker the opposing party in the state of utah has a right to speak ot 01 the democratic party of the united states and itis that party which more particularly concerns us when it comes to considering the tariff question therefore that party place the tariff upon products that we cannot raise or that we cannot produce in this country and in regard to their reform their tariff reform they speak so much about that means that all raw material such as coal and iron and the like along the line of raw material should be admitted into our country free the republican party places a tax upon articles that we can raise that we can manufacture in order that we may afford protection to the industries of this country the republican party places a tax upon articles which we can produce that ive we can raise and that we can mahu manufacture facture I 1 wish to call your attention to the fact that from years ago from the landing of the pilgrim fathers at plymouth rock or eighty years from the time of the formation of this gov government the wealth of this country had increased only to the sum of about sixteen billion dollars to place it in round numbers you that have knowledge of the history of our country well know that during our colonial days the colonies were not permitted oto r to establish any manufacturing industries not even so much as to make a horseshoe nail england purchased our raw material took it across the sea and gave employment thereby to their men at home and aid sent back such articles as the wants and the necessities that the ga 1 required ten te n i ing the establish establishment men t of industries upon the american soil after the declaration la lar of independence and the people of the then colonies had assumed the responsibilities of government they realized but little concerning the protective system from the fact feet that they had the traditions and principles of tree free trade instilled in their minds and you remember during the different periods bf bt our history how the whig party had sought to establish the tho protective system but simply in a meagre way when the republican party came into power they found the treasury empty without any resources on hand to manage the affairs of the government mrs 13 M short sang sing barbara and she was applauded applan ded to I 1 t the he e echo c ho mr meakin was again called for and recited solitude to an encore reciting the jolly old man ilan of ogden then came the song bt bf the evening by the ladles glee club battle song as printed in the report of the wo mans meeting on another page the audience went wild and the club repeated the last verse as an encore 1 JOHN HENRY SMITH was presented as the last speaker and spoke SIP oke as follows ladles ladies and gentlemen I 1 am happy in the companionship of my friends in speaking upon the question of the hour to me republicanism Is very dear and the he necessity of guarding our interest InE erest and guarding the interest of our nation to my mind has ever been one of the most sacred duties that could be attached to the american statesman our nation for years has been divided upon lines that indicated the views expressed in brief by mr eldredge and which present before the american people the propositions of government or the character of the administration of that government which we all lov so much I 1 take it that every man and every woman within the bound of my voice are in heart and soul devoted to the of the principles involved in the establishment of this government and that while they may differ upon the best beat method of conducting that government each one in the midst of its administration would do their uttermost for it we sometimes however are extremely thoughtless in regard to our responsibilities as aitt zens and the best interests of ourselves and the nation at large the question of the maintenance of the tariff system in my mind is one of very great importance today to the people of this thle nation tharo seems no other medium provided by which wo we can guard against the encroachments encroach ments of slave labor we have to the southward mexico with her cheap labor we have japan with her aptness for manufactory while she has |
