Show AFTER THE BATTLE A review of the election and the result the democrats made a dirty mean campaign several instances are given the republicans made a clean honest fight cause of defeat and victory none in the city probably baa to rejoice after the election just closed in ogden than THE STANDARD the city goes republican after the democrats carried the city election last fall by over 1500 majority this is a areat switching of votes nine papers out of ten in THE STANDARDS position would claim a great victory for the paper not so with THE while it is rue THE STANDARD was made the geue by the democrats at tha same time this paper recognizes the fact that THE STANDARD ie only the mouthpiece of the majority of the people ot ogden therefore this paper claims the victory for the people it was a great victory when all thines are taken into consideration the democrats for instance made a very dirty mean contemptible fight on william driver in face bome of taft charges publication some charges monday night certain men called at certain saloons and on certain gamblers and informed stiem that william driver had said if he were elected ho would close every gambling house in the city and would make the liquor license eu high that the saloons would have to close up then again on macday night and all day tuesday it was circulated that wm driver hart ben in an insane asylum and that the doctors biad rp ported that he was not anred yet hence he would have to go back to the asylum and if he were elected ogden would have a crazy man for mayoh the man who got up yarn and those who reported it should blush for shame but probably they have no manhood then again it was stated yand saturday that mr driver bad only two weeks ago kicked his wife end family out of hie house democrats you who tod this deliberate falsehood to get votes do your consciences prick you perhaps the most damaging etory told was that by dan hamer because he had a foundation and a very poor one ut that to build bis story upon and hundreds of cited THE STANDARD to etory and said that iiames gave his word of honor that wm driver was a dishonest man THE STANDARD called upon Mr Hamer and accordine acco idine to blamers ll amers story ae told by himself he wronged wm driver very much tnie is substantially the story in november 1894 geo W driver borrowed from dan hamer and gave him note or I 1 0 V signed by G W driver not wm driver or driver co or driver son but G W driver dan iiames was tax collector of county V ro driver paid tin taxes on her home to hamer and dan hamer took the money irom mrs driver aud applied it on geoge W drivers account and ou home for taxes when this matter became known to mra driver ohe demanded aiom the county court j that the tax sale be lifted from her property as ehe could prove beyond a doubt that be bad paid the tae in fact she held a receipt proving it and dan iiames we forced to buy up the tax eale on sire drivere home and cancel it now while iiames admitted all the foregoing to THE editor thin ie the way he told it to the 1 I took of the money and loaned it to wm driver when the sheriff waa about to attach his property and close up hie business I 1 had to pay the to the county and sir driver refused to pay even the interest in fact repudiated the whole claim ani driver ie a dishonest man because he cheated me out of this etory certainly took from driver a hundred or more votee it is only faia to state that mr hamer claims that geo driver gave the to wen driver son but there is no proof of such at any rate this was a nasty atory I 1 to circulate the day before election it had good reason to belive his story true he debould have published bis statement in standard would gladly have published the matter and given mr driver an opportunity port unity to prove mr hamer wrong or in case he failed THE STANDARD would not have supported him for office A man who would steal from dan hamer would do ahn game thing from the city it he cot a clauce mr hacker did wrong in suppressing his story until the day before election ven if his statement was true but to have made up hi story for no other purpose than to defeat driver is damnable in the extreme there is no excuse for clamera fl amera action it is stories like these manufactured out of whole cloth that turned from driver hundreds of votes and the election it is only lair to tay that THE baa no knowledge of mr boyles connection with any of these rumors and stories it is possible that his followers did all thip hie knowledge or consent the methodist neth odist church THE STANDARD could give probably n full of these basty false and mall cious borits so rits circulated concerning driver but the foregoing are enough to ave ahe public an idea of the dirty campaign that waa waged against driver in the methodist church was preached a sermon against driver while no names were mentioned yet the preacher emphatically stated that the people should not vota for a man who sold aquor it is a act that all drugstores beell liquor and as driver was the on lyman liquor on either ticket the apt was well directed Other evangelical churches delivered temperence lecture it was hoped would nf luence votes against driver so it will be eden there was at least edane influence against driver sore head republicans it is charged that such men as RIL whipple C M brough chas meighan ind their usual ff mates were intang the ticket right and left 1 these nen had much complaint td ause the republican candidates agreed to reduce the taxes they were con inu ally finding fault with the ticket ut always protesting that 10 barm and would help elevi the bicket so on election day a detective vas put on their track and the proof is om that they did not favor the i abol republican ticket not by a good leal it beems that these old line tepu blicaus aa they call iad agreed to knie driver and the five le publican councilmen for no other I 1 reason than that they a pledge to reduce the dixee the detective reported that chas was luko in hie for the ticket but late in the afternoon on the day of election eaid a kind word for the ticket the foreheads are all marked had they done their duty they could have elected driver with their own votes but these things caused drivel defeat the fight for the council in the first ward I 1 N pierce and dr comrov were entitled to election reelection re their services in the present council should have entitled them to a reward pierce however was defeated because he was not a taxpayer which was an error as be paid taxes on the canning factory while ha did not own his own conoe he was a taxpayer but the rumor cot out that he did not pay taxes and be was swamped dr comrov ia one of the beet councilmen now in the council his defeat was a surprise but it seems he the washakie Washa kip dub and after the club assisted in securing ins nomination the members left him to the onslaught of the anti indians who slaved the doctor without mercy it is that the Wash akies traced conroy for boyle votes the Waa bakies boldly assert that boyle was the only man their club endorsed and hence they traded everything to favor bolfe in the second ward richard hill was defeated because his eon worked on the street department they charged n against him he also was combined against by several cliques that used the knife with telling effect jones had a hard row to hoe from the beginning the richards people had stood his taunts and insults long as po isible and the day of reckoning had arrived and is usual with charley richards be came out victorious in the third the republican candidates were both elected the fight there was on the reduction of taxes and the forty per cent reduction avys favored in the fourth the fight was personal aud revengeful councilman was a member of the equalization board lugt summer and took part in raisina the taxes of our merchants the latter kepi their peace and waited until election day and every business man livine in the weurth ward and abst of them do and their families voted for alex brewer he being a merchant they hoped for more favorable treatment him on the equalization board next year bewer Is a most popular young man and be ran like a blooded horse if he makes a good record in the council the a year he will undoubtedly succeed the next mayor of ogden wooley it seems forgot all about the fact that be was running to councilman and after the palls ere closed ha visited them to learn the result becher made a good race and gave wooley a close nib for the office in the fifth tom browning was reelected in apito of the fact that the evening press was bitterly fishtine figh tine him it does not make any difference to TOO what they pay about him Hes known and to know him means to love him frank was defeated by a very small margin the gentiles scratched frank not because they did not lika liim but because the objected to two mormon candidates on the ticket but OK EIGHT AFTER THE BATTLE CONTINUED PAGE aj notwithstanding the loss of the vote frank came within fifteen votes of being sheeted sleeted slee ted S P ash of the present council was reelected re elected he made a fine record in the council ani no doubt together with the defection from Stevens elected him while willard snow is a good man it seems he did not make the for the office as did bome others lie made a dignified race but dignity count when running tor office the fellow who is the best rustler with the biggest pull usually is successful the conclusion the campaign adema to have been clean on all he candidates excepting mayor an dolice justice the fight for mayor was dirty very dirty and all on the democratic side i mr driver can well eay 1 I would rather be defeated with the clean fight for me than to be elected by the fight that was m ada a sir boyles fa |
