close watch on institution A gentleman a wild relative in abat institution informs the tribune that the place should be called a school of crime and gives which if correct make the place a disgrace to the abate some things which he are not proper to print but he ia ready to rive hie beliefs to any state officer who is in any measure responsible tor the conduct ot that place if hall that be says ie would be better to send wild boy to the itself than to that home for eliat matter it would be better to kill him it once and trust to to the mercy of god to save his reporters were detailed to secure statements from each of the trustees ot the school and from the superintendent perin mr allison mr AlU sons statement follows there is no truth in the article published in the tribunes editorial column there is a and an improper manner of preferring such changes if they have charges to prefer let them make them to the board of trustees I 1 am ready to meet them at any time and court an investigation when asked if lie bad any idea as to the originators of the charges mr allison eaid yes I 1 think there were stories told by those two boys recently sent to the penitentiary they threatened that they would make an expose of the man ner of life at tha school it they were bent to the penitentiary this was before they left they said they would get even with the management I 1 will elate am ready to meet any and all charges properly preferred J II 11 macmillan acting of the board of trustees eaid 4 1 I am certainty surprised to see the article in tribune in regard to mat 3 at the industrial school as there has never been a complaint of thise character made by the parent an person confined in the institution bince my incumbency in office if there is anything of tins character going on at the school it is entirely outside of any knowledge of mine and I 1 am ready at any time to boar any complaints pla ints and to investigate the same without fear or favori whenever have visited the school to attend the meetings the board there has been ample eunity to lay bedfor the board any and all charges anyone ajay wish to make the board has no secret sessions and all the business busi nees ie carried on as openly as any court of justise in the state I 1 think it very strange that euch reports should be made to other persons and not one word of complaint made to the trustee the members of the board always look about the grounds and buildings when a is held and nothing wrong has been noticed so far as I 1 know I 1 want it understood that we will always be glad to investigate any charges that might bo made by any person great or email even belief expressed to me would have my earnest attention and careful investigation but not a whisper out of the wy hae ever reached my ears mr N C flygare Ily gare the other member of the board espres seu as follows it is about two the board of Trustee 0 have visited the schools we found there that the two boys who were sent to the penitentiary were exerting a bad influence on others there and fer that reason they were again brought intorf court for otherwise the board found nothing out of the way the parties behind whom the tribune hides while making ita scurrilous remarks will come forward and make their complaint to the proper persons the board they will be pleased to look into the matter of such charges no doubt persons who have been punished while of the would tell almost any black story and it is probably such apon which the article in is bated W ight was interviewed and nothing whatever about bey narges us be had never attended and had no official e of trustee lie stated that be had noticed ia TUB the report of his appointment but that was all the be bad jos S peery county attorney atto iney waa gormerly lor merly a member of the reform school board and upon approached ou the subject said that the state law contemplated the segregation of the in mates that the school as intended to be run oa what is called the cottage system it is in a sense a school for crime when the 18 to 20 year old bobb steeped in crime are permitted to associate with the younger and inexperienced perien ced inmates I 1 was discouraged very much during my incumbency in the office of trustee the inmates ifould be separated the plans should be the same as a graded school the lesalie criminals kept away from the mora vicious the girls should be kept away from the boys and under the 97 laws there is an appropriation for the purpose of putting up a separate building and separate grounds for the gills I 1 understand the trustee s are now negotiating plans for such purpose when this is done there will be marked improvement in the result the tho in the act in reference to the cottage system was not carried out was because of the appropriation there is no but that there are great benefits resulting from the teaching at this school they have as good opportunities as any pupil in the i public schools the teachers are progressive gres sive audit is a fact that 80 per cent of those paroled live commendable lives j |
