Show TAXATION PROPOSED on may the text book convention will convene at rait lake city for the of adopting a series of text books for the state outside of cities of the first and second claer this convention will be composed of the county superintendents of the various counties together with the state superintendent and president of the state normal school the cities will also adopt books time the books will be adopted for a period of five years should a complete change oi blohs be made it would cost the people of tbs abs state a quarter of a million dollars if a adoption re of the present books now in use could he made the cost would be comparatively small tho question is can the people of the state afford to make such sweeping changes every five years to satisfy aba desires of conae few officers and publishing houses we eay no we believe that it we have a book now in use that is fully fat is factory it should be retained if the convention which met five years ago made a mistake in some ot the books will it not do so again Is not this desire for a change merely because of the teachers and book cibeu are tired of the series and not on account of its merits have not our children progressed fairly well with the present books we understand tant each series is supplemented by the work of the teacher to a large extent we have it upon good authority that it cost the state outside of salt bake city to make the exchange of readers alone five ago what did it cot for all the series we hope that the boards and county superintendents will take a conservative view of this matter and endeavor to realize the heavy burden of taxation already placed unon their if some of the books need and we are assured that they do we have nothing to eay but to make a wholesale for simply the idea of changing as some advocate would be most burdensome we have confidence enough in the present board of education and superintendent of the ogden city schools to believe that they will adopt the proper cauree in this important matter the money that would be expended to bring about a change of text books would eo out of the stale not a dollar of which would to benefit at any industry in utah during these dull times cannot afford to as a quarter of a million dollars to make ilni tho hearts of a few boole amenta and ell the exchequer of dis tabt publishing lomes |
