gratified the first fight between the silver and round money forces will occur on the question of temporary organization organisation of the convention ven tion when chairman harrity calls it to order at noon tomorrow according to present appearances the prayer is about the only part of the preliminary proceedings which ia likely to unchallenged in no previous great national convention has the recommendation of the duly chosen national committee in regard to the temporary pre eiding officer been antagonized by a minority report and a demand for a vote but the present gathering ia an exceptional one and is likely to break in upon precedents prece denta in more than one by a vote of 27 to 23 the majority of the national committee decided to recommend senator david B hill ae temporary chairman ol 01 the convention mr 0 S thomas of colorado gave notice that a minority report would be presented recommending om the selection of senator john W daniel and that the convention would be asked to make a choice between the two nominations it is a urious fact that lat the last democratic convention held in this city daring the memorable night session which resulted in the nomination of grover cleveland senator daniel with dauntless courage faced for over on hour a hostile howl audience in as the especial champion of senator hill the n by the irony of politics he is now antagonized the method of proceeding tomorrow will probably be as follows when chairman harrity calls the convention to order and recommends the selection of hill as temporary chairman a minority member of the national committee will offer a substitute naming senator daniel under parliamentary law a substitute must fist be voted upon and the only open question in this case seems to ba whether or not mr harrity will recognize one of bis silver associates for the purpose of offering this substitute the convention having not been organized end no roll of the delegates having been patted upon the silver men claim that aa b the act in recommending a temporary chairman for the approval of the convention is an admission that the convention is to act upon it if this be true in the one case they assert that it must be so in the case of the substitute should sir harrity refuse to put the motion for the adoption of the substitute some silver member of the national committee will put the question and the first skir mis between the sold and silver factions will be precipitated 1 I know very little about the parliamentary statutes of this matter said senator tillman tonight but I 1 do claim to be possessed of a little common sense I 1 know that senator daniel will be the temporary chairman of this convention and that he will make the speech if the gold men think that their votes form the majority of this convention just let them iry it the silver men are running this affair and they propose to run it after their own fashion if the gold men dont like it let them bolt 1 hope they will during the early hours of the day a conservative spirit teemed to pervade the more radical of the silver men and the desire was expressed by many to avoid if possible a clash in the convention the conclusion of the committee to report the selection of senator hill has caused a sudden drop in thia con and the feeling between the two parties now is more bitter than ever in the choice of a presidential candidate to represent the free silver platform the days developments have noted no marked change bianas friends are doing most of the claiming and shouting efforts to ret the silver men to caucus on the nominations in advance of the meeting of the convention continue bome of the silver leaders declaring their fears that the result of euch a caucus would be to create dissensions sen in their ranks and aid the gold bugs in their efforts to disorganize them the california delaca lion appears determined to present to the convention the name of senator white of that state despite the protests of the senator that he is not a candi date and does net desire lo 10 be one at a meeting of the delegation today the matter was discussed several delegates stating that they believed the time would come in the contest when tha convention would turn to senator white as the only man upon whom the contending delegations could unite for this reason they proposed to keep him ai their candidate senator white entered an emphatic protest and if hie wishes are respected the delegates ill look elsewhere for their candidate no attempt was made today lo 10 decide upon any candidate other than mr white with the california senator out of the way the vote of the s ate will be dittri buted among the various candidates NATIONAL COMMITTEE MEETS senator david B illel rough the national committee of the danger there was before it of defeat at the polls should it nominate a populist rather than democrat mr C J smith replied for the silver delegation and by the test vote of alie afternoon 27 to 23 it was decided to place the castor dele gation on the temporary roll next came the ohio contest that from the eighteenth district wherein john II 11 clark and A M raff gold men sought the of conrad schweitzer and W S fotte dilver men the gold men had been recognized by their district convention and the silver denby the state convention and the cabe was elated by mr dark in gereon for himself and raff and by mr john for alie silver men the committee voted 24 to 17 to sustain the decision of the state convention and cave the silver men a place on the roll A rather unexpected contest came up from south dakota where a delegation of silver men headed by dr rose sought to he beata forfeited by the state convention to the delegation headed by delegate FH stover it waa a clear case of silver against gold but the committee decided without the formality of a ballot and practically by a unanimous vote to seat the stover or gold delegation this ended the contests tor seats in the convention as far as he national committee was concerned mr bryan was somewhat surprised at the result in the nebraska case and when announced he said to a reporter of thu united press well we received more than the silver votes of the committee anyhow and will be boated by the committee on credentials without question because we have the most clear right to a place in tho convention ven tion ex general don M dickinson was more than usually complacent when the vote upon the michigan was announced to him you will notice he remarked that mr campane Camp aue motion to seat the silver delegates received only his own vote and that the motion W give the gold delegates their seats wa made by chas S thomas of tb leading silver members of the national committee what will be done in the convention about the matter mr dickinson was asked ob immaterial quite immaterial be replied at once as he walked away the committee then decided to recommend a temporary chairman oi the minority report would be made and the name of lion W H daniel wool be to the convention as a substitute sti tute he said the views ot the new york on the currency question are at variance with those of a majority of the delegates to alie convention he as the representative of the eastern gold men we have been informed by the preas that these men have sent delegations here to influence the convention ad statements have been made by these men in the press and at public meetings mee tines which they have held in tills city that they will agree to no compromise and will no effort to accomplish their ends we would say to them that the majority will accept no compromise and aleo will spare no effort to secure their purpose which is to name a man in accord with their views they do not desire to wore in secret but they fight in the open and therefore notify the committee that a minority report will be prevented with the hon W H daniels named as temporary chairman and they will ask that the deliberative body be permitted to select a presiding officer who ia in accord with the views of the majority in conclusion mr thomas chairman harrity in view of the statement that had
