Show MAY BE ALIVE tapping heard in twin shaft mine A bare possibility that some of the entombed miners maybe taken gut alive work being pushed Wilkes birre pa july 5 there is a bare possibility that some of the men entombed in the twin shaft at pittston Pit may be taken out alive the rescuing which was at work until 4 this morning reported to mine foreman obrien that they had heard rapping on the rails of the gangway road which may have been caused by some of the entombed men the rap pings were clear and distinct aa though some one had struck the rail with a hard substance the supposed signal was answered by the rescuers in the same mauner after a short silence the answer came back clear and and die tonight the rescuers say they are within feet of the entombed men the shifts have been increased from twenty to thirty five who are relieved every half hour they are still cutting through the rock and progressing progress inK more rapidly than at anytime heretofore since the work commenced through the orders of general super in law several skillful men were quietly sent into the shaft to verify the etory of the mappings rap pings after prolonged efforts and the use of every method of signalling sign alling possible they came anck tonight with a report of failure not the least bit of noise indicating that their labor had been successful the work of the izreo mine inspectors to investigate the disaster will begin tomorrow |
