Show AN APPEAL TO to the relay oad race iniquity proposed by the glory grabbers of salt lake ogaden citizens protest against ahe injustice done by the relay manipulators of the capital the following explanatory self letter baa been forwarded sir WR of the examiner OGDEN utah july W R Hf caret esq proprietor exun auer san francisco and journal new york dear sir we the undersigner undersigned under signed citizens of ogden Utah beg to hand you herewith a copy of THE OGDEN STANDARD of july 1896 and invite your attention to the article with accompanying map on page bunder the heading the relay road race having full confidence in the belief that your agent in salt lake city who is entrusted with the duty of laying out the route for the transcontinental yellow fellow relay is seeking to give the citizens of salt like a treat at the expense of time and distance in the relay ride thereby proving himself recreant to the trust which lias been reposed in him by the people who are promoting the enterprise in question we feel it incumbent upon ourselves to enter an emphatic protest against hia action in this respect and in order to prova to you that the route proposed by mr rishel is not twenty five miles less fifteen miles less nor any number of miles ices than the distance via ogden to eay nothing of the disadvantages possessed by the proposed route we make the following proposition first we will undertake 0 o furnish a number of road riders the majority of them with established record who will cover the distance of miles from terrace to echo providing you will undertake to furnish our rider from terrace eastward with a letter or packet precisely similar to that which is handed to the rider furnished by mr rishel to cover the first relay from ter race southward second we will undertake to deliver the said letter or packet to your rider from echo eastward ahead of mr rish els rider provided however that the route as heretofore designated by mr rishel is adhered to third 11 we perform our portion of this contract our riders are to receive the medals emoluments and whatever benefits may accrue from the undertaking as provided for in your contract with mr rishel while hia men in the event of their failure to deliver the said packet or letter at echo in advance of our riders are to receive nothing fourth fin the other hand if we fai to perform our specified and mr riders sue aeed in delivering the eaid letter or packet at echo in advance of our riders we ask for nothing and you are entirely welcome to whatever benefits may accrue from the efforts of our riders in this behalf we are vours truly FO schramm W T beardsleyy Beard W badcob J F Ledwidge GF john pingree J W abbott geo alien 0 M cottery a L II 11 wallace A weber T il beecraft pee craft it naw devolves upon mr rishel to demonstrate by the acceptance or declination cli nation ot ahe challenge his confidence or lack of confidence in the route which be has selected for the transcontinental relay ride those of the ogden road riders who have been consulted in regard to the matter are more than anxious to enter upon the performance of their portion of the contract and every indication points to the fact that this contest it arrangements are successfully cess fully and properly made will bo one of the most exciting and interesting in the annals of utah cycling |
