where between six and seven thousand 1 were at the railway elation A J enright dr doyle F P and 0 F cochran editor of the st joseph gazette escorted bryan to the platform erected for the candidate abo crowd cheered with marvelous enthusiasm bryan said ladles and gentlemen I 1 believe thie is a larger crowd than we bad when we had our silver meeting here last november I 1 dont know whether to regard it aa an evidence that the curiosity baa increased or aa an evidence that the allver cause has grown since last korem her applause I 1 have been very much gratified to find the interest people are taking in tilis campaign I 1 am not vain enough to assume that these demonstrations are intended as a personal compliment fa voice yes they are but rather as an indication of that respect we find in alie hearts of american people for our government and those who for the time being stand aalthe ot our govern i rabat and abote who aspire to positions of prominence in the administration of that government I 1 bald the eign of that respect for our government and roy friends whenever I 1 think of the government I 1 think of the words that there are no necessary rec essary evils in government that its evils exist only in its abuse the government is what it ought to be when it is what the people desire it should be a blessing without alloy and it la our duty as citizens to compel love for our government by ayery citizen by making the government good that people will not love it but be willing to lay down their lives that it may be perpetuated to posterity applause when we declare against somo law as unjust when we criticism criticise critic ise a policy it must not be considered as an attack apon the government and yet therb are some who would denounce every person who beeks reform and every person who seeks to change a custom several hundred people were assembled at the francis street station in st joseph and with many of these mr bresn shook hands at forest city mo there was a big clowd and a band and the handshaking wag repeated A royal welcome to his own state way given mr bryan the first town after crossing tho missouri into nebraska was jalo and although althou eh the place Is small in population it was not lacking in ability to make a noise there was something strikingly similar to a railway hold up or lynching bee in the manner adopted by eulo in letting the democratic candidate know be was in the land of bis friends and neighbors A the train came to a standstill three men rushed forward and began firing their shotguns and rifles with which they were armed then a brass band composed of boys struck up an air of welcome when mr bryan appeared on the platform a great shout went up from the crowd at the station then there was a rush for the train and in a minute the nominee was in a maelstrom of wildly excited and enthusiastic residents of rulo A woman rushed up with a baby in her arms and managed to say that the youngster was william jennings bryan jones or some other family name men pushed forward and said god bless you and women for a handshake mr bryan did not speak at rulo and the train pulled out amid the blowing of steam whistles and the cheering of the inhabitants at fall city nearly nebraskans were gathered al the little depot to meet mr bryan and when he appeared on the platform of the car he was greeted with cheers ot welcome after shaking hands with a large number mr bryan eaid he was exceedingly gratified at the reception accorded him on his return to his native state he said that of all the counties in nebraska none were more loyal than richardson county in his two campaigns for congress richardson had given him a majority and be trusted that this fall ehe would not be behind her record of former years he was glad to see many of nebraska citizens present for another reason he wanted the newspaper men oa the trainee look into their faces and carry the news to the east that tha people of nebraska can be trusted with the government humboldt turned out a large crowd alio greeted mr bryau warmly and rushed forward to shake bands melr him the whole population appear edio have turned out at table rock and at st joseph and several other places mrs bryan was deluged with flowers an anvil salute assisted the great au albence there in giving rent to its enthusiasm thusia sm and when mr bryan escorted by william II 11 jennings walked down the platform to a temporary dais the people went wild mr jennings introduced mr bryan and the latter responded in a feeling litile epee cli he said ladies and gentlemen I 1 hardly know what tb eay I 1 supposed that when I 1 came nebraska 1 would be met by some enthusiastic frienda who have been loyal during years past and by some who have been endeared by ties of personal friendship but I 1 hardly expected from bulo to this point such continued manifestations of beur affection I 1 came to nebraska a young man knowing none of you and I 1 cannot complain of what nebraska has done for me if I 1 have been able to dp for nebraska some part of what she has done for me I 1 have done a great deal I 1 owe to the nebraska people what there has been of my public life although I 1 have been made the nominee I 1 come back just as I 1 did nine years ago a private citizen who will vie with you in public as in private in doing what beeme beat for tho glory and the welfare of our people if I 1 debould talk until the end of the campaign it I 1 were able to all the languages of tho world all the tongues of christendom I 1 should not be able to express how I 1 thank you from my heart for your kindly feelings manifested and for what you have done for me my highest ambition is to so live that those who have put their trust in me may never have cause to regret it cheers the reception committees from lincoln joined the party at kock A delegation from the lincoln korosi also greeted mrs bryan there elk city had its crowd and tecumseh turned out people and a brass band which boarded the train and accompanied it to lincoln there were flowers galore for mr and mrs bryantt tecumseh and bome of the people pelted them with the fragrant blooms the people here were too anxious to shake mr bryana hand and to cheer or to call for some remarks and they shook and cheered with might and main just before leaving Tecum seli mr bryan announced that it bad been finally determined that the official notification of his nomination should take place in N ew york he said the date had not been fixed but it would probably be arranged to have the demonstration during the first week in august people poured into the train at several stations and rode short distances the better to get an opportunity to the nominee many ladies in addition to the corosia contingent were in the lincoln party that joined the train at and as nearly all were friend of mr bryan things began to assume quiet a homelike home like air A knot of people cheered at smart ville as the train whirled past and at sterling where a stop of a minute was made those assembled there pave three cheece one little incident that occurred at sterling was witnessed with the greatest interest by those in the car in which mr and mrs bryan happened to be at the time the finger of grace bryan was caught under a falling window faeh and alie pitiful cries of the little one brought mrs bryan to its side she took the youngster in her and bound atie injured finger with a pocket hand 1 kerchief talking soothingly all the while mr bryan also did what he conid 0 o quiet the child and their combined efforts finally bad the desired effect adams turned out a hundred of its population firth bad a contingent of enthused inhabitants and their cheers were augmented by the steam whistle
