Show STREET RAILWAY STRIKE thirty five hundred em aloyes walk out and then go back to work the entire city of boston without street car service for a few hours only a Few Suburban lines running boston dec 24 because of abe alleged refusal of the west end street railway company to recognize their union and to concede a demand of a ten hour work day employed emp loyes early this morning quit their posts of duty and effectually tied up a street railway system operating lines through the entire city proper south boston dorchester east boston bridgetown bridgeton Brid geton cambridge portions of newton maiden everett medford and in the entire roxbury and charleston districts not since the strike of the west end railway employed emp loyes in february 1887 has the general public so fully realized its dependence upon the street railway lines for transportation between the various districts of this city as today coming just at christmas the s trahe has greatly inconvenienced thousands who wished to visit he city stores to purchase their gifts and all thoroughfares have been crowded with pedestrians despite the biting wind that ha prevailed birly this morning an en terp rifling teamster put out a line of passenger barges between charlestown Charles town and a and reaped a harvest later lines were started under the management of abe strikers the steam railroads have been dangerously overcrowded on account of sudden demands made upon them daring the late afternoon and ealy evening tha suburban traffic ovi r the boston and albany road was immense the station was packed with a dense mass of humanity and although trains were run every 10 or 15 minutes the cars were filled like so many bardine boxes abe crowds pushing jamming and trampling upon one another for standing room men shouted and women nearly fainted in the excitement and innumerable bundles and boxes contain ng presents aad breakable articles were crushed beyond recognition by the crowd which resembled a pack of frenzied animals more than a collection of rational human beings there were somewhat similar scenes enacted at the other railway stations the committee of the conductors and that held the conference wilh abe west end directors last night and agreed to a postponement of tha strike called up president little in anjer to place themselves right in the ayea of the west end officials they explained the apparent violation of the agreement entered into last night by saying that the men took mattere into their own hands and the strike aras a fact even though abe supreme council was not aware of it all this and more was submitted to president little and it waa again intimated that nothing would avail until the agreement was signed president reiterated his statement 1 of yesterday that he waa powerless to sign the agreement and that evan if he did eo it would be worth tese without first being accepted by the executive commit of the company west end street railway company tonight issued a notice to ftp em aloyes in which it states all em aloyes who in the bertice of the company will I 1 protected 1 that all who voluntarily absented from ervice will be considered as having withdrawn from the employ of ahe company abe company advertised for motormen and conductors today and it was said tonight toni that in response a large number of men had been secured at 9 tonight came the airet signs j of 01 abe part of kore when it was reported that men of division no 7 which arlington newton and wet had gone bacate to work and a a result a few care aro g tonight between boston and harvard square cambridge some fifty or sixty men also re rarned on division no 5 bouth boston over on the charleston birron dir ron the strikers declare that if men are broncha from other cities to take their places will be trouble declared boston dec 21 late tonight the strike declared off by council of alie conductors and motor mens union fand the men will return to work tomorrow |
