Show THE PIRATES SCORED SUCCESS greeted by a magnificent audience the presentation was notably well done and the library association Is ahead about the musical event of the season in amateur circles the grand which was predicted attended the appearance of the pirates of Pec zance opera company at the grand opera house last evening the sweet singers from zion proved prettier and more musical that the most enthusiastic had anticipated the library netted about from the presentation sen tation and the immense audience the splendid performance was more alian satisfied all the features were in evidence the augmented salt lake theater orchestra under the direction of prof weihe delighted the audience with new and novel selections the accompaniment pani ment to the music of the opera was skillfully skill full and well executed the orchestra came in for a rood share of braice in chorus work the pirates proved ex the result of years of training could be noticed excellent feature was the harmonious composition of the cboins as relates to the various parts neither part overbalanced any other and as a whole the effect was very pleasing mr peabody manipulated bis aaion with the grace and accuracy of a master in individual work the palm buet be awarded to ass mss louise savage whose pure voice entranced her listeners she ie a student of prof S goddard the instructor of vocal music in the ogden school of muaia and the success she achieved is largely due to the training under mr goddard in the leading lady part that of mabel she has ample opportunity to display the sweetness and culture of her voice and to say she made a hit would babut simple justice the tenor role by mr jenks very agreeable when confined to the execution of his notes but his afflicting belf rather impaired the good effect of bis tine voice in duo and trio work be appeared to excellent advantage the tone and true operatic effect are supplied by mr II 11 8 goddard as the pirate king up io the time of hie appearance the presentation lacked force but his magnificent stage presence and fine voice stiffened it up to an appreciative degree throughout mr presence aided won der fully in shaking off the amateur associations that would creep in miss cooper as ruth coula hardly be improve upon even if composition compoi tion were drawn from the ranks of probes cio nals her part called for considerable execution and she was always ready with a faultless rendition of her notes the leading comedy part was ably taken care of by mr westervelt the capable feignant Feigo ant ut police his local hits and fresh and much appreciated in makeup too he evinced as good taste as in alie selection ot bis songs mr bowney and mr sneed demon their ability to take good care of their parts behind the security of amateurs they may be mentioned in favorable comment miss smith miss and miss pretty faces and rood voices in the union parts that fell to portion in the chorus miss morris was prominent adoue the altoe while liea porter was a tower of strength to the sopranos the audience was keenly appreciative precia tive and a number of floral tributes found their way to the feet of the favorite sic miss savage received bonnet as did miss burke and mies smith mr downey and mr westervelt were the recipients of boquete cut from the cabbage variety and bent by good na lured salt lake ends durine the performance mr joseph S peery for the library association announced the appreciation of the association for the many favors received from the opera company the press and the many friends who had aided in bringing Dri nging about the success of the opera the audience showed their sympathy with the aeo by applauding mr ferrye announcement no |
