Show FLOODS IN SOUTHERN UTAH Ii lillard and sevier the sufferers great Darf to crops bridges swept away stock drowned not yet abated special to THE STANDARD fillmore july 14 yesterdays flood was the largest ever visited upon this city and county everything along the areek bottom is flooded grain hay houses and stock have been washed away and the whole ia a scene of devastation the big bridge which crossed the creek at main street in fillmore was destroyed thousands of cords of wood down and was deposited on lots and adjoining land in the town A number of cantio and horeck were drowned in the flood and it is as yet impossible to estimate damage today a larger amount of water came than yesterday over acres of hay and grain at tho sink eight miles west are inundated every sawmill in the canyons is swept away together with about a dozen wagons and as many sets of harness reports just come from the mountains that there is a argo flood five miles above town estimated damage already done thirty to forty thousand dollars meadows eight miles south of hero are completely under water much damage was done at scipio all the people east of tho creek hero are wild with excitement and are moving on higher ground just ahead of the volume of water of yesterday came some boys on horseback wiio as they entered the town shouted a warning that u flood was corn ng an enormous enor moua body of water swept down out of the canyon and over that portion of ahe town lying on the bottom ands inundating and devastating grain and lucern fields gardens etc As the flood came down from the mountains il tore up trees ground together and crushed bou and carried onto the lands large quantities of driftwood etc A singular phenomenon immediately preceded the rush of water down the canyon for half an hour before this occurred a powerful and very disagree ib 0 o odor filled the atmosphere A lumber ot persons cacao near being aught in the flood which would un have drowned them so far is known no lives were lost but there is anxiety for alie safety of em aloyed in the mountains measures for lie relief of damaged persons have been iken at kanab and meadow towns in lillard county heavy floods occurred doing considerable damage bridges and dams were swept away and farm ms lands were inundated floods also occurred in sanpete county at fairview the track of the R G AY was heavily covered with debris trains had to stop running until the rubbish could be cleared away standing crops were beaten down barns etc were swept away streets were submerged and much damage was done several washouts ot the grade of the R G Y occurred in and bovier it is known that several towns in those counties were visited by heavy balne which must have done more or less damage but detailed information has not been received tha social which was to have been held baat evening bv the ladles of the christian church in lester park has been postponed until thie evening when it will be held nt the residence of mr ed T morion 94 capitol avenue |
