Show OLD BOLT illinois takes the lead TAKE THEIR say it was a convention of populists lists in address by ahe illinois balters urging the sound money men of the united states to join with them in placing a single standard and candidates before the people an arraignment of the convention just adjourned their reasons for action chicago july 13 the honest democrats of illinois issued an addrece tonight to the Democrat Bof other states alling upon them to nominate another national ticket and adopt a platform of sound money principles ples upon which the nominees can appeal to the people of that opinion this address was authorized zed at a meeting of the executive committee and a committee of three was appointed to write and issue it this committee met today inthe law office of henry 8 robbins president of the illinois democratic sound money league and agreed upon the address which is as follows to our fellow democrats of other states A national convention convened under the constituted authority of our party has just closed ite session in the city of chicago it entered upon its work by violating all party precedents in the rejection of a distinguished democrat as its temporary presiding officer it deprived a sovereign state of a voice in its deliberations by unsealing unseating un without cause or legal justification delegates elected all the regularity known to party organization it refused to endorse the honesty and fidelity of the present democratic national administration it adopted a platform which favors the free and unlimited coinage of silver by this country alone at a ratio of 16 to 1 and thereby it repudiates a time honored democratic principle which demands the maintenance of a sound and stable national currency finally to make it still plainer that although in name it was not in fact ft democratic convention it nominated for president one who ie not in hia political convictions and has not always been in his professions a democrat this has made buch a crisis that the sound money democrats must at once decide what political action they will take for the protection of the honor of the nation the prosperity of the deop and the life and usefulness of the party the bound money democrats of illinois have fully made up their minds that ft new democratic national conven tion should bo called for the earliest feasible day to nominate ift candid ites for president and vice president and to adopt a platform of democratic principles and they desire to state to their fellow democrats of the other states their reasons as follows 1 the sound money democrats owe it to the country to make it certain at once that their revolt against free silver is determined and well organized it ia unfair to obligate the credit of the nation aud the business and industrial interests of the people to merely guess what sound money democrats will do in november and to wait until november to find out 2 the nomination of a new ticket is the logical course without it and a sound money democratic campaign camp aien tha whole force of sound money democracy sentiment nt would be paralyzed from the beginning revolutions cannot argue the sound money question to democratic voters republican sincerity on that question is doubted by the demo cratic masses ithe tariff question will be put to the front and insisted upon by republican speakers and the republican press and it has been repeatedly done by mckinley himself democrat will not listen to talk on finance when it OS GOLD MEN BOLT FROM 1 is accompanied by abuse of the democratic party the most effective force at this time for a campaign is the force residing in the sound money democrats for they are profoundly in earnist and can get a cheari ng from democrats that the laicans cannot possibly get without a campaign we should not only have no speakers but our press would be firing in the air and the whole force of campaign organization end campaign work ere in campaign literature and the great power of constant private discussion and appeal would all be lost 3 A new convention would aleo preserve for the future the opportunities of the democratic party unless a clear comparison is made between the genuine democrats and the democrats who are drifting into populism or are already in populism and unless that clear cut separation is supported by organization and a reorganized democratic party is the result the party has no chance of regaining regain inc public confidence for years to come the sound money democrats no association with the bryan party or they must accept association and entanglement with it and all state or will la the public mind be for it that do not make it absolutely clear that they are against it 4 democrats aho vho believe in democratic principles must havo a party they now have the opportunity to reorganize and keep the democratic party interests of tho nation imperatively demand that the great democratic party shall be rescued out f populism and kept on its historic hie foun elation the sound money democrat are already sufficiently organized in this to be able to meet their fellow democrats in a new convention and arv anxious to confer with of another state whenever a representative conference can be brough t abou we hope that out of the responses to this public statement of the views of the nois democracy there can be gathered eo much ot the ya dyment of the leading sound money of the states can bo into a plan of action should iff addressed to mr baric A ewing chairman palmer ebous chicago john M A cooperation of eastern party in the call or a new i ticket from telegrams received today from the bew york and other party leaders in ane empire state it ia as good as settled that new yorks democratic machine will not favor another convention senator hills plan ia understood to bo fight for the election of gold congressmen and for the throwing of the presidential election into the contest for a gold president would be more probable than with a third ticket the illinois gold democrate received a setback today in the announcement of postmaster washington hesing a leader of that faction fron the start that he was opposed to a third third ticket he denounced the proposition on the ground that a third ticket would mean tho election of the silver democratic ticket the revolt of the illinoia delegation against which broke out firstin the convention hall when the lobryan to Bryan accentuated today by the resignation of col henry F donovan of chicago of his position of inspector general of the illinoia national guard to which he waa appointed by the governor col donovan was an original boies man and lead the anti bland borcea in the convention against the governor |
