| Show MORE prosperity but wages continue to decline illinois steel company gives notice of a reduction and says we do not care whether the filen like it op not 4 chicago nov 21 the illinois steel company has given notice to the aloyes in ane blast furnaces in operation at the south chicago works that on december 1 a reduced scale of wages will eo into effect keepers will be paid helpers and cinder snappers iron carri rs top fillers barrow inen thie scale is called readjustment of wages and not a reduction by the company although it cuts the wages of the front side men who got a 25 per cent increase by striking in july 1895 from 15 to 20 per cent the men who compelled the company to give them a 10 per cent increase in may 1895 aro not affected by the nev ecale the notice posted states in case it is found necessary to make further reductions in the above scale thirty days notice will be given of such change and it is expected the employed emp loyes will give notice thirty days previous to the time that they demand an increase of wages to take effect first vice president foote said today this readjustment leaves the wages ln our milla 5 per cent higher than the highest wages paid in the pittsburg mills our competitors wo do net care if our men like it or not |
