Show ordered by COURT secretary herbert to look into the washington nov 9 secretary herbert ordered the following court of inquiry on the accident to the battleship texas commodore J N miller now corni mandant of the boston kavy yard chief engineer W W duncan the i senior officer ot his corpa now inspector of machinery at cramps and naval constructor J F hanscom Han acom with lieutenant walling as judge the court will meet at the naval yard new york at 1 p m wed nedday the only additional information the navy departments has received is contained in the following official telegram from commodore sicard A section of texas starboard stai board gaiu injection pipe was removed for repairs and the pipe to seaward was blanketed off just inside of tho main injection valve just above abo floor plates this morning about 6 the yoke through which the stem to the injection valve passed broke under the pressure of the water outside and the aea water filled the starboard engine compartment and thence leaked through the closed water tight doors and gradually flooded the port engick compartment ship not flooded in other parts the ship settled down upon the soft bottom heading south and now lies easily in water in twenty five feet of water port side and 29 starboard side secured to cob dock just south of stern and listed about six degrees to starboard two tugs of chapman wrecking company pumping and diver down in starboard engine room endeavoring ende avorine to stop leak narkeeta Nar keeta in attendance ninas boilers repairing so cannot be used dry dock no 3 is being prepared to receive texas a soon as leak is stopped further details will be wired as soon as obtainable signed it appears from this that usual precautions prescribed by the regulations were observed by those in charge of the work which connections and aa the workmen had left the valve all right saturday Sat arday the accident clearly occurring this morning before work was resumed indicates that the yoke gave way to the one ton pressure that had been upon it for about thirty six hours the reference to the naval tugs Nark ceta and nina s taken as explaining why outside tugs were called upon in the emergency |
