Show THE delegates assemble in convention J N kimball president pro tern J F chidester Chlde ster sergeant at arms cavid evans precipitates a bow bushel of candidates THE 58 E 3rd S suit lake city the republican delegates fifty seven of the fifty nine elected to lie conati tut ional convention held a caucus day evening in tho council chamber of tho wasatch build ing and agreed upon a plan for alie organization of tho convention ven tion at that caucus lion james N kimball of ogden was selected for president pro tern M wella of salt lake temporary secretary J F chidester Oh idester of garfield temporary eer geant at arms and frank mcgurran cn temporary stenographer the selection of candidates for permanent officers was deterred until after session the caucus was called to order by territorial rit orial chairman and delegate elect diaries crane A committee consisting ot charles crane W F jamee and bieber st wells was chosen to confer with secretary of state richards as to the power of tho constitutional conventi onto provide for the payment of stenographers to report the proceeding of the session the caucus also decided upon order of business for today as follows delegate charles crane to call alie convention to order that president woodruff be invited to offer prayer secretary richards to read the roll of delegates chief justice merritt to administer the oath of office governor west to deliver a short address election of temporary officers nominated saturday night f the caucus ahn adjourned to meet today and carry out the program ASSEMBLES alter nearly a bait century ot turmoil and vicissitude under territorial government utah enters upon a career of independence and belt government today the convention was called to order in the joint city and county building by charles crane george Q cannon opened with prayer the roll of delegates was called by secretary richards ninety seven members answered to their names chief justice merritt administered tho oath of office the members standing holding up their right hands chairman crane next introduced governor west who delivered an able and timely address which was received with much approbation and enthusiasm on motion of george M cannon james N kimball without opposition was elected temporary president of the convention J F chidester cb idester of pang aitch was elected temporary sergeant at arms the president appointed a committee pf seven on credentials as follows and evang weber Pe tereon grand ivins washington roberts davis squires salt lake stover the convention then adjourned until tomorrow at half past 10 a in at the beginning of the proceedings a clash occurred in the opening of the convention jast as crane airoso to speak david evans also arose and put hia motion that alie oldest member should open alie convention ven tion the two kept talking simultaneously for a time and conflicting motions were made but finally a motion mado by squires of salt lako that charles crane open tho convention was very much more largely supported than evans motion and n tho midst of tills contention president cannon was called on for prayer all stood up while he prayed but at alie close the contusion continued tor some time but finally the evans motion was lost eight of and things went forward more harmoniously but on tho whole was a most disgraceful and painful pro ce eding and ft is to bo hoped will not occur again there seems a likelihood that P P chr ie teneen of thoele tooele will be secretary salt lake lias enough candidates to pi tho congress of tho united states with all needed officials all the available room ans occupied by several hundred being present LAST tho length of tho session will depend largely upon tho current consumption of the amount appropriated by tho government for defraying tho expenses of the convention A little figuring will show that alio session will bo limited to eltty days or less for instance delegates i per day each 2800 per day clerk bereano at irnia each three clerks deaca 1200 4 here are expenses aggregating per day and thi with rent printing advertising ver etc etc will easily overrun over run tsoo per day and this amount will exhaust the in 60 days or less so that not more than two months will bo consumed in framing the constitution and this extent of time Is fully up to the average of time consumed by in framing their constitution S W eccles etheral freight agent of the union la at portland where the interesting question of separate receivership tor the utah northern and oregon short lano comes up today for hearing af pf |
