they have depre dated or upon the beet biere aleo further to ascertain ol 01 southern ulea oft their reservation boond in said counties and lie number ol 01 called renegade or diute piute indians in pursuance 0 these orders we left salt lake city on the evening of january jtb in company with lessons lessors les sors J N pearse thomas and harry green the delegation sent to to you the of the citizens of bald counties and i the afternoon of abo following day the we fluid oar in moab the county boat of alrand county having made known our business and announced our readiness to begin operations at once the eer vices of a guide interpreter and horses wore abed and on ahn jtb wo proceeded over rough and trying trail about twenty miles to a point on tho grand river probably twelve milca below moab the indian camp which we expected to and there had recently been abandoned but next mornine the ath we followed the trail of the tepee roles and about three milea further up the river toward we cama upon the camp there were six lodges one of teem being that of bridger jack and family well known members of the renegade band which lias so long ranged in the southeastern part of the territory the remaining were aboe of southern U tee some of the men having been present ai the monticello powwow pow wow when yourself colonel agent day colonel lawton and others met in conference with the indians on the of december we baw and conversed with dave root a lebed indian rod hock ma henry goodman and others fifteen bucks in all they said they were utes ten day ago but were baich no longer that their abent bad thena to come into utah and scatter and tay which latter they proposed to do maybe in the sprint some ol 01 them would go to uintah or bome cite but not buck j until would nok giove anny where collected wood and supplies for the winter and had found pasturage pat urage for their ponies and flocks and finally that they had been imposed upon by their agent and would under no circumstances have anything more to do with him by actual count the till of alia camp was aa fallows ful lows ter jack eona and family renegades rene gades 0 soule with ponies southern utes off their reservation bucks squaws and 41 boule with ponies and bead of and coats these facts were communicated to you by courier and telegraph on our return to and these indians were the only ones we found in grand county As to depredations committed by them vicinity we heard no complaints until our return from tho adjoining county on the when mr john lover idee who had been our guide to the camp and had recently returned from another visit to his cattle range reported having found two beeves slaughtered and the bones stripped of meat the indian mode when killing other peoples cattle on the of january we started for sau juan county and on abo alth traversed on horseback largo tract of aoun try about the midd leof dry valley where indians wore reported but saw no signs of them on the tr n oline south easterly we came to and remained one at a cowboy camp near lied rock on fiig indian wash ed in of taylor Rr others cattle inon here reported that tho iii eh t before inglina from a camp near by hal stolen butcher knife coat and the hide and tallow of baeb be had lust lulled he followed their trail and recovered from their lodges lucli part of his property a they could not eat here were plenty of pony tracks giving evidence that the abandonment of a large camp had been only recent on the 1311 we concluded that the ob ejects of cur trip could be better accod by our and going in different direction two reasons to support this idea one was that the country is so large and broken and the bealler was 0 o threatening that we would hardly be able to make alie rounds in lees than several weeks the other and the more important aioo was that knowledge know ledga of our presence and bua ineas was being conveyed to tho andine by their couriers and in other w ays their suspicions were ami they were likely to take advantage of any delay on our part to move their camps into and inaccessible localities and possibly them eel captain abbs traveled canyon wee taud church draw found extraordinary tra proceeding was falso cilento a in bluff by the mall carrier and two othere who had seen mr day and at tho place mentioned odonnell testified that on the the indians from bug park came trooping down the canyon within three rods of his camp and that be baw igancio colorow and other leading atee with families and stock and they took the hay which day had bent them declaring at the timo he would ave to bring all the rest of their rations to them he also said they told him they going to colorado but after much consented to go a little nearer that so ai to get supplies on the gibbs and party remained in camp in beef babin A storm raged all day cannon took the trail of the recently departed deo arted utes and followed it thirteen allee pasting nino dead pongee on ibe way and every few miles finding small herd that been too poor and weak to keep up with the march in tho liesik of buin canyon and within probably the elate line he came upon a camp of seventeen lodgaa went into ignacita Ignac ioa and marianas lodges squaws and oace but one belog over in colorado half n dozen ailee distant getting his BID plies he other bein out after the horses A visit to other healed in like manner the absence of the bucks but by actual count there were 27 equate 41 papooses and 7 bucke inthe camp on the side hills there were three flocke of sheep and route about in all and on the mesa cajon and in the nooks break inn into alie canyon between and head of pongee such bucks as would talk were sullen and full of cureka against the agent and reiterated tho story that they biad been deceived by him but would not go into colorado hey intended to move up and down ahe conj on mesa and further westward fla feed for their stuck demand but their goniea will hardly need much more moving for of them are surely about to die of starvation cannon continued down the canyon about miles further met two bucke from tho supply depot kindly established by the agent with new coats flour conee etc which they boldly said were anat issued to them and which they were coming back into utah to enjoy and consume them tried to explain where lied jacket and party were camped bat pirty was unable to find it and after the total of 77 indians seen and counted in camp the party returned ret orned to the cow camp at the junction of cross and montezuma canyons 49 head of pongee and 5 alth 10 conlea cannon started on hia return end reached verdure via montezuma canyon and bodne trail on the moved toward the point of rendezvous and on the evening of the we met ut Carll sloe ranch miles north of SI there turn journey continued on the and and on the afternoon of the we the railroad at Thomp gone sprine arriving in salt lako city at midnight duri the three week wo traveled nearly miles more chah bal of tho digance di tance by angon and on horseback and some of the time in snow breast deep to the and in mud eliat seemed wo found in all thirty nine lodgy of Bott thorn ute in diana and lodgie of called renegades rene gades also one lodge of uintah butya and three ol 01 Nav aloes wo f i bunted oun ted and in tho foregoing report i ave endeavored to show the location of bouthern Bou thorn ute indiana In diane with 1779 ponies and 1226 sheep and goat also so called renegades rene gades boide and 0 it as our custom to inquire at each point visited alie estimated number ol 01 real renegades who were recognized as having a right to be in the country and in no u were wo told by the or interpreters that the band exceeded a total of souls the usual estimate being sixta to seventy alve bome giving the figure as higens ninety and others it low as forty it will be been that w have made a total ol 01 in explanation 0 which it may be stated that a doubtful caine to our notice we rave colorado the benefit of the doubt and clareed it up to utah renegade account also that e positively assured by reputable men who have lived in both colorado and i utah and who know the indiana bodi that some whom we have classed as renegades are southern utes at least to the extent of drawing piles and money from the agency I 1 we deem it also proper to stale that i whilo our ordera contemplated cont emulated no fuves of navajo incursions or depredations dat ions we could not but be impressed the fact these indiana are more troublesome to the settlers ot southern san juan than are either the rene gades or southern aies they ae continually guilty of putty thefts and themselves and their are continually over tho san juan river and working injury and loss upon the settlers in this connection may it also be mentioned the fact that arizona has a band of renegades rene gades with headquarters near Moan coppy the band is frequently confused with the utah renegades rene gades which it dearly equals in number and with which it is in exchanging plunder tho rene eades of the two counties named are poverty stricken band and their condition generally is deplorable there la absolutely no came to be had and any depredations they or alie southern utes may make upon the and settlers herds are esy to be accounted tor the colorado indians look batand hearty and in comparison the others are comfortably clothed but their ponies are pitifully poor and hardly halt of them will survive the winter in conclusion we deedre to express thanks to ahe people of alio two counties who havo with scarcely an exception been ready to give have shown us every courtesy it is not necessary to name all thus placed us under but few are deserving ot individual mention charles snell who started wi li us on our arrival at moab made the entire trio with captain gibbs as both aulde and interpreter and returned with ua to that point II olbert mcclure Mc Ciure who accompanied captain cannon on bis trip and rendered invaluable assistance in similar capacity sheriff willard butt of san juan county for like services and many courtesies county clerk mcdermott for map prepared to accompany this report and for affidavits procured as to depredations not herein mentioned the citizens delegation with whom we made the journey ironi salt lake cily to the point of investigation and last but by all moans most conspicuous in his as courtesy mr J learae whose time and means were at our service from the moment we left salt lake city until wo were on board the cars homeward bound W
