throng pr crent the ot the evanine were hon y 1 wharton philadelphia and ex governor drinco ol 01 new mexico following are the remarks of mr barker the eminent eastern advocate of li 1 II 11 r president gentlemen of the convention and citizens of utah 1 I have come here from philadelphia in obedience to a call of american living west of the mississippi to dis anse some questions which now demand attention and whoso Bo lution is of the utmost importance I 1 propose to do eo in a plain and direct way they are all national questions and in no way local or sectional I 1 intend to direct your attention to subjects in the fields io economics and politics industry commerce finance the maintenance of domestic welfare and the defense of the extensive national line are all involved and all objects at the present moment of the most serious concern it ie the duty of thia people to uphold a true american policy and I 1 hold that t is their supreme duty to conserve protect and justify these interests of the united state and that chewel i fare of other nations so far as wo are bound to give them consideration will bo best served through the prosperity and independence of alio great republic I 1 recognize that in the present age a nation may be nominally independent and yet actually in subjection aliat liat though its political bonds may be it may still bo held by trade or debt or cunning in servitude to others the industrial and financial as well as the political independence of the united states is therefore the demand I 1 make we must lye serve alie national strength restore attivo and prosperous domestic industry and aid in composing social controversies the measures which I 1 advocate include an adequate protective tarin considerate 0 all sections of alie country and unduly favoring none the prompt restoration by independent action of the united states of alie joint aeo of gold and silver money at the ratio of most vigorous means hichi may be safely adopted the establishment of a true reciprocity of trade with nations which offer us valuable competitive noncompetitive non products the extension and enlargement of our relations financially and commercially with the nations north and west ot ue whoso interests lie in alie nrc of silver in coinage as against the policy of gold these are not new doctrines but their consideration is newly demanded if we are to maintain democratic institutions and ansur the stability of the republic we must meet them with courage promptitude and wisdom if we would have conservative democracy instead of socialism Rocial ism lila arty instead of despotism there be no doubt that this is alie most critical period of national affairs our have had to meet I 1 appeal to alie people of the united state of all sections and every occupation tor a hearing for the foundation principles that alone make an american policy for a platform upon which men of all sections of alie country can unite and I 1 ask them in all sincerity tor operation cooperation co und support in the presentation and maintenance of the principles for which it stands this country has ixon largely developed by the concentration of capital through corporations by alie assistance given by them to men oi enterprise in their labor to subdue nature so long as capital worked honestly with labor all was well but alien alie capitalists made ivin of the corporations under their control and attempted to make their investment in such corporations more valuable by alie appreciation of money of ultimate payment a period oi wrongdoing wrong doing and disaster abat lias brought great wealth to a small group f men of ono degree or to all debtors and ruin to many and out of it we have now to meet a crisis more serious and difficult to manage alian any that lias come before for alio evils to stamp out are subtle they an in many cases hidden absolutely at alie present time the railroads and alie banking corporations are largely controlled bv few groups of rich men almost all of them advocates of the gold standard advocates of gold coin and of bank currency as the only sate paper money the operations of these groups are bliem selves largely controlled by a still smaller number of persons you can alino it cont them upon your fingers the men whoso purpose if in harmony can direct the whole of our international commerce and of alie great productive industries of the country men who expand and contract credits stimulate ana depress prices of all kinds of commodities and necessities and make all business transactions depend upon say 1 such a tremendous concentration of control has there been that the function of the states and of alio nation are in large measure impeded by an impassible and unseen power thus the indi pen dence of alie great mass of the people is endangered li not destroyed and as they fief this they grow discontented and disturbed the contentment and quiet would elisi with a cordial and friendly alliance between labor and capital vanish and in place of them we leavo crude and violent attempts to re drees grievance keenly felt it not exactly understood there should bo no surprise when we sec vehement popular protests against alie aee of concentrated capital or the organization of new parties deaia bated to make resistance to it at one point or another there are real evils i to be remedied is danger that industrial and financial disorder will result from measures bcd and advocated by the leaderer of hie dissatisfied elapses for men seldom understand the problems alipy have to deal with it Is alie clear duty of all patriotic citizens to chock thu aggression of concentrated capital on the one side and to protect the interest of the areat body of alie people on the other by appropriate prop public TOca surce the cliques of capitalists awk to destroy proper cooperation of the people by alio creation of combinations that create monopolies no and the labor classes are led to destroy alie proper activities of capital by violent and most unwise strikes alie industrial establishments and transportation systems of ehte country an subjected to alie seesaw see saw of alternate inflation and wrecking finally falling into the 0 the cliques the ings 0 alie people taken from then on cadi reaction being absorbed at prices artificially inflated and returned at prices artificially depressed and alie control of domestic industry by organized monopolies completes lie circle of public robbery certainly it ie not surprising surp that our affairs are rocked and shaken with alie biath of a public opinion chich fe elsif it does not forcibly comprehend alie wrong eliat are alius perpetrated clr barker concluded by reading numerous extracts from alio philadelphia american pertinent to the subject in band alie was warmly applauded governor ex prince followed in one of hie masterly addressee after which the meeting adjourned |
