| Show MAYNE IN TROUBLE the well known real estate boomer in the toils the following article from the san francisco chronicle tells of the predicament ofa May newell known in ogden during the carnival season mr maynes career haa been a checkered one of late years and on account of his large acquaintance in ogden the following article will doubtless prove of interest to the readers of TUB clinton K davne one of the promoters of the metropolitan electric road was arrested yesterday afternoon by detective fred bsola on a superior court warrant charging him with obtaining money by false pretenses the warrant is based upon three indictments returned by the grand jury of two ago the complainant is michael tears arwin who charges that mayne secured from bin some two years ago through fraudulent means namely the sale of property to which the accused had no title at the time of the return of the indictments mayno was in ban diego the warrant was sent south but liehan left the town and gone east the matter rested in abeyance until recently when it was learned that maylie had returned tu san francisco the sheriff was notified but was unable to find the original warrant A new one was issued and served yesterday at the palace hotel where mayne has been residing for the past two weeks ills ball was set at 2000 on each indictment or as a total mayne way turned over to tho sheriff and taken to the county jail last evening at the jail last night mr mayne said 1 I can truthfully say I 1 do not understand this affair two or three years ago when I 1 was in ban diego I 1 heard that an attempt was being made here to get an indictment against me my attorney told me that there was nothing which could be brought against me on which an indictment could be based on that I 1 rested ing certain that no trouble would result what has happened today I 1 suppose an indictment was found but for years I 1 have lived in california been in business busi nees in san diego and have frequently been in san francisco 1 I suppose the basis oath indictment is a real estate transaction to which I 1 was party and which has caused me some trouble before but not exactly this kind of trouble I 1 purchased considerable property south of the park and subdivided it for sale A considerable portion I 1 sold on a deferred payment system among our purchasers was this man irvin or annan innan I 1 dont remember his name well enough to be surd of it lie took the contract and was contented to keep it paying the deferred payments until about 2000 had been paid in and until the property began to depreciate in value he then ceased his payments and when I 1 had put up about 1000 more 1 had to let my payments lapse and my contract was cancelled lie lost about 2000 and I 1 lost that 2000 and 1000 more I 1 give him back his money and be has taken this way of playing even for what was as great a financial loss to me as it was to him mr mayne who has been in business in san diego for the past two years and in the state almost constantly was to the trans mississippi congress from san diego and was in attendance at all of its sessions |
