Show THE SANPETE HOMICIDE inquest over the remain and the pu held mount pleasant utah sept 28 the remains of sheriff burns arrived in this city about this morning tiie party that left spring city for the body last evening arrived at the scene of the shooting at about 8 and found the victim in the position in which he fell a pool of blood around him thy body was placed on a horse and taken to a saw mill conveyed to spring city and then here an inquest was held immediately on the arrival of the body by the county coroner and hia examination showed that five balls had entered the body one into and shattering the right shoulder one through the light breast and fungone lu ngone through the left breast one through the mt shoulder and one into the right leg near the ihian passing downward and out near the knee and entering the left leg below the knee and down to the ankle where it again came out three of the shots were fatal ones and looked aa though made by rifle balls the leg and right should or appeared to have been made by pistol balls this corroborates the statement that both pistol and rifle had been used mount pleasant utah sept 28 the funeral today of james burns was the largest and most impressive ever held in sanpete county the spacious meeting house chero the exercises were held did not more than half accommodate the multitude it is estimated that not far short of a thousand people were present it required fully halt an hour for them to pass and view the remains members from manti lodge A 0 U W and nephi lodge 10 0 F were present and joined with abo local lodges in the ceremonies the people did not attend the late sheriff burns funeral from a feeling of curiosity but from one of deep pare respect and love for the man the sadness in the hearts of hundreds of people was unmistakably depicted in their laces the ceremonies were appropriate and pleasing and every homage that could be paid to the beloved dead and the living relatives was sincerely done the line of procession from the meeting house extended several blocks several speakers spoke of the merits of the deceased as a citizen and an officer and the lodges closed the ceremonies at the cemetery the floral tributes were many and lovely A party camo in from the posse this evening tor fresh but had no definite information other than they were eure tho murderers mur derera were eur rounded several rumors were current this evening but they have little or no foundation mickela parties up from city today say that mrs mickel or feterson claims positively that she baa received word from her eon james who was one of the twain who did the shooting that he ie wounded in two places that burns did it that he has stolen no sheep and that he lias not billed any one it burns bred any shots the pistol from which he did so ja missing the eye who saw burns reiterate that burns did not fire a shot did not more than get his pistol from bis pocket and fell before lie could use it there does not seem to be much doubt that efforts are being made by friends of the murderers to thwart it possible the searching carlies par lies at any rate there seems to be a general unwillingness on the part of spring city citizens to adist in the capture of the fugitives no effort however is being spared to effect their capture and it ia confidently conf dently believed this wilt bo done as a snowfall in the mountains is in avor of the searchers vj |
