Show THE EVENING STANDARD it is now just one month STANDARD changed from a mornine to an even ing paper and the increase in our Bub list ia eo gratifying that we actually believe that even in these hard times ogden city may make it possible to make a daily paper self sup during the month just closed new subscribers ra have been registered on our boobs and forty three subscribers discontinued their paper on account odthe change making a net gain of subscribers these new are not all from ogden about one half being scattered in the neighboring towns for instance sixteen new names came from logan nine from corinne and so on throughout the entire neighborhood bo this increase in the circulation of THE STANDARD should warrant an increase in the advertising rates the value of advertising in a paper is not regulated by the hour of its publication but by the size ot its circulation A few of our business men and as a rule they are those who do not patronize THE STANDARD are complaining about not having a morning paper they say it gives the town a black eye bot to have a morning paper those gentlemen have only themselves to blame for bad they nivea STANDARD the support they usually give to papers outside of the city STANDARD would not have changed to an evening paper it ie true to a certain extent that strangers do guage a town by its ability to publish a morning paper because a morning paper is a very expensive luxury and it is a sure sign of prosperity for a community the size of ogden to publish a good morning paper and it would have been the pleasure of this management to have continued to pub lish in the morning could we have received sufficient support to do so we have made up a deficit which averaged for the last nineteen months over per month our personal exchequer made good this deficit until our pocketbook was empty and there was only one of two things to do to stop the paper or change to an evening paper we chose the latter now while we feel grateful to those who have stood loyal by us with their unswerving support and while we would cheerfully overlook any complaints made by them yet we must denounce in unqualified terms those who would not support STANDARD and who now kick and roar at the change from mornine to evening A business man who did not and does not now support this paper has no right to find fault with THE STANDARD one gentleman said that THE owns the associated press franchise and no other morning paper can start in ogden this gentleman is only partly ight THE STANDARD paid cash for its franchise and will willingly turn it over to anyone at actual cost and as an inducement will give the privilege of taking the morning dispatches for one year to any paper free of charge any gentleman or set of gentlemen who think they can make a morning paper pay in ogden at the present time can have our endorsement and support we are perfectly satisfied with the EVENING STANDARD and if our circulation increases this month as much as last month TUE STANDARD will for the first month during the year pay its running expenses we prefer to run a morning paper but until we can see our way clear to have the paper pay its way or until some of our enterprising kickers foot the monthly deficit we shall continue to publish in the even ine the evening herald published some years ago was the only paper ever published in ogden that paid a dividend every morning paper has been a failure while THE STANDARD can not now publish in the morning we believe it will be only a matter of time when we shall publish again so still it all depends on the business THE STANDARD does |
