indict they also handed in their report and were excused until thursday 1 ol lowing ia a copy of the report TERM 1893 james A miner judge of the fourth judicial district court of utah territory we the grand jury have the honor to submit the following we have been in session seventeen days except thanksgiving and sundays have had before cases of which number there have been 15 united state cases and 47 territorial wo have spent eight days in tho examination of united keates cases and nine days in territorial have rendered 48 indictments and ignored fourteen cases and haro examined 4 witnesses we have visited the county jail city jail reform school poor farm and the hospital THE COUNTY JAIL upon our visit to the county jail wo found that sheriff belnap was doing all in his power to make the prisoners comfortable in the jail but was severely handicapped in this from the fact that the bed and worthless that the underground der ground jail was damp and needed gli renovating renova ting that all the walla should be whitewashed wo also found that the county did not furnish a night watchman and this fact is sufficient to have the matter looked into at once for instance if the building should get on fire and no watchman there tho prisoners would be burned alive all the prisoners say they get plenty of substantial food and well cooked we suggest that tho county provide new bedding and a night watchman THE CITY JAIL was the next place wo visited and we find everything in first class condition except we think there should be more ventilation in the large jail building PH say they acet plenty of bood food and well cooked THE REFORM SCHOOL we next went to the school and here we found a model public institution there cannot be too much praise given to mr allison the superintendent of the in for the way he manages the es everywhere you go about it yon find the strictest cleanliness plenty osgood food and well cooked they hive about thirty eight inmates thirty two male and bix female and everyone of them were well satisfied and looked well tho grounds and buildings are very well taken care of and it is a credit to the territory we here have to thank our foreman mr spivey for our transportation to and from the school THE POOR HOUSE we next visited the poor house which we found in good condition everything being clean and the food substantial and well cooked we found superintendent parker and family sick and also all of the inmates until it was hard for them to wait on each other the doctor pronounced them cases of la grippe we would ang geat that there be a case of medicines kept there and also that there be some reading matter supplied to the inmates CITY HOSPITAL is in very good condition everything is neat and dean and to speak in the words of some of the sick they get thanksgiving dinners every day france sherwood the superintendent conducted us through every part of the building dr M N graves is physician in charge the patients say they have no complaints to make either way they say they have plenty of care and medical attention THE UNITED STATES MARSHAL has rendered very valuable assistance in getting witness before ns and sheriff has getting before the grand bessea and ony the grand jury recommends that there be two cases held over to the next grand jury as at this time it is almost impossible to get the testimony required fourth district court yesterday to receive his sentence and was given one year in the utah penitentiary A now ballatt it appearing to the court that P A cook a bailiff in the fourth district had resigned it was ordered that S A coppenger be appointed in the said cooks place and that he take the oath john L ferrau pleads john L ferrill was arraigned on indictments charging him with receiving stolen property and entered a plea of not cuilty and the case was set in numerical order for dec lath W L maginnis Mn ginnis gave notice that he would ask leave of the court to endorse the name of ed
