Show THREE CLOSE GALLS CALLS NARROW ESCAPES HAD BY WORKMEN IN A PULP MILL one of them crushed Crul iJ to a shapeless mr brass een iron Il holler toller another whirled around on a belt thrilling experience with a log jam 1 I never ever hear her of persons narrowly escaping death or surviving extraordinary injuries said the new york representative of a big pulp mill company that I 1 do not think of some remarkable instances of the kind that have occurred at one of our mills in tho the northern part of this state on one occasion a work workman nian named wolf was engaged in cleaning a machine used at a certain stage in the process of pulp manufacture thearin the principal c I 1 pa I 1 feature of this machine machi was two very heavy iron rollers one above the other when in operation the upper roller was pressed closely down on the lower one and they revolved in opposite directions to clean these rollers the upper one ono was raised seven sven or eight inches the machine of course being at rest in the course of his work wolf who was a young german thrust his head and shoulders between the rollers to see am better to clean the lower roller while ho he was in that position some careless person turned on tho the water power T the he rollers started at once and before the alarm could be given and tho the water tur turned off wolf was drawn clear through between the rollers and dropped on the other side as much like pulp so far as appearances went as anything could be I 1 happened to be in that part of the mill at the time and saw the frightful mish mishap ap 1 I ran to where the limp form of the workman lay and dispatched a messenger at once for a doctor merely as a matter of form however for that anything could be done for the shapeless mass of humanity never ente entered re d my mind it was as impossible to lift the body wo we shuffled it onto on to a blanket and carried it to the unfortunate mans home I 1 noticed that although there was not the slightest evidence of consciousness wolf was still breathing and that his heart was beating when the doctor came be declared r enthat that from the shoulders down there was positively not a single whole bone left in wolfs body he IIO sai sail i thero ther ewas was not one chanco chance in ten thousand of the man living 11 it would take 10 doctors a week to set his lils bones ho he said he incased the body in plaster from the neck aeck down and when ho he camo came next daywan day was amazed to find that wolf was still alive and had bad regained reea ined conscious consciousness wolf lay incased in plaster for several weeks his bones knit and grew together again but in such a way that when he lie was able to get around he was covered with knobs and ridges and queer corners comers and angles from head to feet but he was alive he ile was our night watchman for 10 years after that and is alive today I 1 another time a workman in a different part of the mill named Sanne was caught in a big belt by a felt apron he wore and before the works work a could be stopped ho he was whirled seven times around the pulleys striking the cei ceiling 1 ing with tremendous force each time he ile was taken up for dead I 1 examined him before the doctor came and there even the sign of an abrasion or mark on his body ten minutes later when tho the doctor came ho he was as black as coal all 0 over ter there a spot on him that was not discolored the doctor examined the faan iman carefully and to his amazement found that there was not a bone broken anywhere re about bi him his ilia injuries were so slight that it he 0 was at work vork again within two days yet he le had passed seven times through a space between the pulley and the beam not over seven inches wide once the dam of one of our mills became so clogged with logs that they interfered with the water power it was necessary to release tho the jam or shut down tho the mill tho the work would necessarily endanger the lives and limbs of all who engaged in it and volunteers were asked tor for handsome extra pay being offered plenty of men were ready to take the risks among them pat obrien obrien an irishman 61 ye years ars old he ile insisted on being ono of the gang and joined it against the protest of the superintendent tho the work of releasing the log jam went all right until the key log that held the main jam was to bo do removed there lay tho the danger the key was removed and the men made mado a wild dash t to 0 escape therrall the rush ruall they all got oat of the way but four among them the old irishman pat aBr obrien len these four were caught among tho the logs and went over tho the falls a sheer descent of 83 foot sien men and logs went over together and everybody supposed that tho the men would be ground to atoms but a most astonishing thing happened in falling a number of logs fell on end in in a 11 group their upper endi ends 0 toppling together forming an almost perfect tent or pe peaked aked hut but with the down stream side ope open n the men had escaped injury not only from the tile logs in the fall but from the tremendous plunge itself and it was as they landed in the water below that the tent of logs formed with them beneath its shelter this saved them from bein being 9 drowned by the tile water that plunged down from tho the great height there was constant danger of the shelter of logs being forced from its lodgment by the pressure of water in view of the latter danger when it came to rescuing them the three young men of the party urged old pat obrien to be hauled up first he ile obstinately refused to be hauled up until his companions ll 11 lad been rescued when ho he took his chance and was landed safely above he ile had bad scarcely been lifted above the shelter of the logs log gs when it gave way and the logs went crashing and thundering on down tho stream I 1 havo have heard of wonderful escapes of death but never anything so wonderful as that now
