Show THE METAL SCHEDULE the duty on lead ores will surely be tampered with many owners or smelters and manura a of loaa load will urge that the duty be taken oil off washington nov 21 it is understood that one of 0 the items of the metal schedule to receive an overhauling by the ways and means committee is that which under the SIc INIc Kinley law places a duty of li cents per pound on orr lead ore the subject has been a point of contention ever since the present law went into effect the tile tariff rate as at present fixed was bitter bitterly fought during the last congress and I 1 it was for a long time doubtful whether the advocates of the tile tariff would succeed in getting it put dut in tile bill there was a mud much lobby in washington in its behalf on both sides than there has been du during airi n 9 this session the tile silver 1 l mine owners of nevada idaho utah and colorado made an especial effort in behalf of the tariff at that time because of the tact fact that much of the tile silver ore mined in those states and territories contained a large percentage of lead it was in their interest especially the provision as it now stands was inserted many owners of smelters shelters sm elters located on the mexican border and outside of the states and territories mentioned opposed it as did also the lead manufacturers but the conditions are now reversed the miners are now seeking to prevent a and nd smelters and manufacturers to procure legislation it would seem the advocates of repeal of the present duty feel quite it e w well ell assured that the action of congress congress will bo be favorable to their cause |
