Show bids have beon opened and returned to but as yet no contract has been awarded each day gardens builders await their fate t P brief description of the works to bo erected ir it awill greatly arrived in ogden yesterday afternoon in the private car san carios bringing with them the plans and figures relating to alio southern pacific shops it was expected eliat alie contract for alie erection of the shops would be awarded immediately upon their arrival but on account the multiplicity of tho figurea it was necessary to have personal interviews with the bidding contractors and all day the office of engineer fitzgerald was crowded with the gentlemen of con tracts no decision was readied last night and this afternoon the matter will again be taken up it is very possible that the award will be made today the bids for contracts on alio new southern pacific shops to be built at ogden have been opened in san francisco and were received here yesterday the is almost in the hand of the workman and the curtain is about to rise on the inaugurating work of these shops it is a moment of expectancy for many idle laborers even ogden cannot deny that it is in a elate of nervous excitement Is everything ready to start the work well everything is ready in every sense of the word but one the contract is yet to be let bat today will doubtless settle that point the first eod may be turned before this week is ended but it will be several months before ib can be said that everything is eliere it is going to s to be that every nail is driven every machine set up and every bucket of paint duly applied where it will do the most good so much haa been published concern ina the proposed shops that but little in detail need be said here the problem of eliere to locate the shops was no problem at all ogdene advantages over all other cities on the salt lake division were paramount it has plenty of water and is in fact one of the most beautiful places on the face of the globo for the employees to live in everybody expects that of these shops in combinations mi several other ripening enterprises that will necessitate the employment of many men will give a great boom to ogden real estate in fact business men are willing to gamble that all business will ba generously increased As a city ogden has always i realized alie chances of great has invariably thrown itself into enterprises wath the liveliest energy is not plastered over j flats and adobe business blocks ehe haa a conservative and fashionable residence section and imposing rowa of brick and stone business blocks business has never been in a position of dangerous collapse yet the presence orthe southern pacific shops will benefit all lines of trade and a vast element of alie town will feel much benefit from the enterprise yes the shops are going to be a great blessing to the city in fact it is not an exaggeration to say that they will paralyze alie development of hard times for a period of many years ogden can note with a deep thrill of arido the successful workings of her leading citizens who u have put their shoulders to the f wheel have worked together in harmony to promote numerous ilag enterprises now they can r lay aside their pens and rest during tho hot bummer months and do it with a feeling that what is going to be done in building etc is in a great measure the result of their own labors for they leavo given ogden her character it is liard to work up great popular inter cat in industries of any sort but og dens public spirited men were not here to loaf they have advertised the natural advantages of the city they have laid alich stress upon cheso facts and as a result now industries are announced weekly ogden is a most fruitful and fascinating city it fascinates more influential well to do and able bodied men today than any other western c ty lie enterprise of other western cities in competition are distanced to euch an extent that they are out of eight in tho rear the results of enterprise in other cities are not always f commensurate with the labor and time employed considering that tho erection of the southern pacific shops would be a benefit to the city of ogden and increase the taxable property the chamber of commerce agreed to pay tho Sout licin pacific company on alie comple tion of the buildings with its machinery round bouso and other buildings it waa also provided that tho shops bo completed on or before janu itry ast 1st 1894 A deposit of was made by alie president of commerce of ogden city in the utah national bank of og dan to be paid to tho southern pacific company upon the said machine shops round house and other buildings being completed and occupied lefore or on tho 1st of january tho original contract called for a machine and blacksmith shop 80 feet wide by feet in length a locomotive round house of an office and store room building 30 feet wide by feet in length and all such out buildings iron racks coal bins etc as may be required and are usually used in connection with railway machine shops and round houses and eliat they would construct said and round houses of brick and fully complete the bamo on or before alie lat of january 1894 heretofore stated and will have removed prior to that time its machinery and employees from it shops at terrace utah and carain nevada to ogden the southern pacific company said they would use at least brick in the construction of said shops and employ about men these brick are to be by the city of ogden also the city aives the southern pacific company a title to one cubic foot of the waters ot weber river the company will uso about men principally composed of skilled mechanics in the construction of these buildings tho effect of he payroll will be to increase the payroll of this city about a month and will be the aucless of future improvements made by this company in connection with the mechanical ch and construction departments of their railroad and will have amoral and stimulating influence upon the location in this city of other improvements of a like and of a manufacturing character tho company will more than fill their contract the roundhouse for an instance will have twenty stalls instead of sixteen ae mentioned in the contract while all improvements are to be on a more extensive scale than alie original proposition the company have given assurance that soon as the smelting of iron is established in ogden they will build car shops and locomotive works surrounding and running into the various buildings are upwards of thirty distinct tracks some idea of tho magnitude of alie buildings may be obtained from alio following brief survey the power of the machinery is located n the northwest corner which is called ahe boiler room there will also bo located in this room a stationery engine and pump to be used for washing boilers and utilized in cases of fire the dimensions of the boiler room are 32 x 20 adjoining the boiler the office of the foreman which ia 17 ft in length and aft 3 inches in the fuel room joins thi th i foremans office and is of tho bame dimensions there is a vacant room which occupies he corner and which is not appropriated at present for any par icolar department east of the boiler room are the emery wheels bolt cutters drills baths laths car wheel borers and wheel presses all occupying space of about x 25 several different varieties of lathes in this room lathes are of great importance and are extensively applied by the mechanics the most delicate articles of ornament equally with the most ponderous machinery being produced by them the ammense variety of work performed by machines in railroad shops ne sessi tates great variations in con it ruction but their mode of operation s always the fame and consists in fix ng the work in position by two pivots or otherwise causing it to revolve reely round an axis of revolution of the two jivota are the poles and louing a chisel or other cutting tool so as to meet it during its revolution and moved about to different parts of the work till alie required shape be ob these lathes aro employed for icovy metal work as piston rods wheels axles etc also for car decorations of utility and ornament the wheel presses chero alie car wheels are shaped and made tho borers cutters and other machinery in this department are all of tho latest patterns of practicability and convenience adjoining to the east of the room mentioned is tho tool room in his room are deposited all of the tools and implements used in tho entire building uil ding one man is in of this room and issues all tools charging bem to the workmen who get them and credits their return the tool room covers covers an area of 2417 north of alie lathing and tool rooms are alie pita that the locomotives stand on to be repaired two run the entire width of alie building while three are shorter extending 55 feet in this section also aro tho turning or shit ting tables used to shift machinery to various parts of the building the blacksmith shop occupies the east end in this shop can bo found alie heavy etcar hammer at least thirteen forges punches and shears that are operated by machinery tho ponderous steam hammer which the company lias purchased has undoubtedly contributed more than any other mechanical invention of modem times in developing car and locomotive iron work and is looked upon as a marvel of engineering edill and ability under the influence of this mechanical invention every variety of blow can be given from alie greatest tap to the heaviest blow within the compass of the hammer and that too self acting in every respect by simply altering the position of tho tappet lever by means of two screws a blow of the exact force required can be produced and continued so long as steam is supplied the public hardly realize that the hammer is completely under control that a wine glass containing an can bo placed upon the anvil let the block descend upon it with its quick motion and eo nice is its adjustment and so delicate its mechanism that the great block weighing several tons can be heard playing tap tap upon the egg without even cracking tho shell when at any time down could come the great mass and alie and glass gouid be apparently as walter salape landor would have it blasted into space thus il can be seen that the hammer force is attained just effectually as with the simplest hand hammer of the emith one etrone giving perhaps a mere touching tap and the next a blow of alie highest intensity tho blacksmith shop is between the shop and tho machine shop are the copper and tin shops in which are the various lathes shapers planers working benches ten ches etc these shops occupy an area of 50 the planers and other machinery in this department which operate on tho same principle as the machinery consists of well tem chisel edged etehl cutters held in a fixed position pressing downwards upon alio metal plate which is moved forward by powerful machinery tho action of thia movement is that a ia plowed into the metal of the lizo of a steel cutter when alio metal 1 HI H 1 1 1 coal bin H s 11 fal A 0 foremes
