Show FROM BOTH SIDES the logan journal is engaged ina ida practice which neither adds to its bartys prestige nor helps the people of utah in this their hour of waiting further it ia is a practice which as it does not afford amusement or instruction to its readers certainly cannot aid in the acquiring ofa good newspaper reputation recently the new now york press a republican paper printed a nasty article about statehood for the territories an article which betrayed malice or ignorance or both on the part of ita its writer among other things the tile press says that the admission of new mexico and arizona with their ignorant mexican and indian population and utah with its thousand of stolid dupes would degrade american citizenship and allow the curse of mormon polygamy to blount its hideousness in ili the eyes of the whole world this unreasoning folly of objection is raised not against utah especially but against all of the three territories named simply because they are democratic it is of such partisan intensity and vindictiveness as might he be displayed and lias has often been displayed by democratic newspapers in fighting republican publican lican measures measures and republican growth gro 1 ath it is directed in this case against the democracy but it finds no echo in the minds of republicans of utah arizona or new lesico lex ico every one of sense must be aware aware that the press is speaking irresponsibly as well as falsely and it must be a very mean man or newspaper that would try to associate joseph P smith with euch such an utterance and yet that is just what the lozan journal does it saya says that the press was on all political questions ons the highest authority of utah republicanism 11 the journal then with aliese introductory words quotes the article from the press answering the demand for statehood hood made bv by THE STANDARD and by pret prest joseph P I 1 smith and others it athe the press says that is a very far fetched way of insinuating a slur about joseph F smith how foolish and useless such buell remarks are can be illustrated by reference to a democratic paper which holds unquestionable rank in its party the nashville american of the same dato date as tile journal from which we have quoted says editorially under a heading liea ding utah not for polygamists that emigration of cormons mormons INform ons from this territory will bo be a strong moral purification fi of utah if joseph P smith is responsible forthe for alie utterances of the republican press then moses thatcher Thatch cr inus must bo be responsible for the saying the tile democratic american 6 or f joseph P F smith should hould ba be slurred blurred and should feel humiliated when a republican paper speaks of stolid dupes then moses thatcher should bo be sneered at and should feel chagrined when a democratic paper says that utah is mot not for polygamists and that mormon emigration from utah 16 will be a strone moral purification of the territory and yet neither of these gentlemen should be held responsible for such declarations what nonsense almost criminal nonsense it is for Journal the or would be for any other paper to stir up petty an and ances locally over the declarations of papers published abroad long before the utah democracy gets through with the tile contract which it lias has undertaken under aken to redeem the it will wear many times the tile ashes and sack of humiliation the journal should so far broaden its view as to look at both and it should refrain from its unfair practices leat it establish a vexing precedent against itself and its friends |
