Show r olt USE OF F A PROJECT TO SUPPLANT HORSES BY ELECTRIC POWER think of doing all AH the heavy work rk with fill electricity he the re I 1 aien I 1 ei A trolley fibrin fil rin that Is I 1 yet inc incomplete n pi t diio ideis idea good elef engineers have been at work for several years to devise a feasible for using electricity ns as a power on oil country roads and farms there is a great economic boss ss through the wit ot of the cus amary sou rcck of power on oil farms du during H ng harvcy harvesting ing anil slid thrashing and much more in transportation over country roads boand from the market in the east this loss is nol nt fco to acrea greal because the quantity of farm products shipped is leta less le ta in III proportion to th whole amount rolfka aud and tile railroad giat vat nn on is usually much nearer fit at hand hall t the lie roads of the east are better but tae aln of power supply which several eit cir engineers favor might prove de r abie in the cast east as well as in the ts ont ial to the tile success of this plan in any neighborhood ia is t this lie condition that there should be an all abundance of coal or of water head licad and real residents dents enough to make the cost of the plant per capita not too large this plan is the use of electricity as a power to supplant horses borses the electricians figure out that there is a waste every year through the time lost in transportation over co country tit ry roads with delays and breakage of gear and the tile cost of the millions of horses and wagons required and a like waste of power in other work about a 1 farm which it saved would bo be more than enough to pay pity the amount of all tays taxes of whatsoever nature borne by the tile farmers on every farm enough horses have to be kept the year round to do the work at the busiest seasons tills means that for a few weeks of activity animals must be fed and cared forthe for the entire year the corn oats and hay which a horse eats in one month would buy enough coal in most parts of the country to furnish more power than the work of the animal in a year the reason that steam power is not used more on farms la is that the plant costs too much to begin with and that the current expense of engineers fire firemen nen and machinists i is so great that the use of steam machinery on small farms is practically prohibited hibi ted on the big western wheat farms the use of steam has greatly diminished tun number of horses required and steam power is profitable there because of the size of the estates and the concentration of their control the development of the trolley system on a cheap and extensive scale is i what certain electrical engineers are now working to accod accomplish PI asli the plant required would consist of only a water wheel and a dynamo supply supplying ll g the power directly to the wires and ono one electrician trI ciari could look after several plants the son of some farmer in fix the neighborhood could soon learn enough to take care of the plant and to run it would not dot take all of his time the power is transmitted readily over the wires so bo that a plant may 1 be erected at some distance from the places it is intended to in parts of the tile country where the tile water supply is deficient deu clent or coal is very cheap steam might bo be used as a substitute for water III running the dynamo it would be leas economical because the original cost of tile plant would be greater ancl and it would require constant attendance the tile power bonse with engines and boilers would require almost constant cure care while adie liel lie l properly set needa need to be loo L 0 oj lally j after f alie plant E and j j are secured it Is proposed to run a power wire on the main road through the neighborhood which contributes to the expense in cafe care there is a turnpike the wire would bo be ru run n over ove r that or it there is not over the th e main MR i 11 road whatever it may br be branches could be run from it in tit as many places as the benefit would warrant with the abea cheap p converters now in use so this power could be largely utilized to the exclusion of horses home 8 the trolley over the main road with one of the traction wagons now frequently found in the west we st would do ill all the babil hauling for the neighborhood it would require no change in the construction of the farm f a rin wagons for they could be loaded as its 11 now ov and picked up along the road by the traction wagan the only limit to the number of wagons that might be betoken betaken taken in 00 one oo train would be the power and the tile strength of the hauling machinery all the farmer need do would be to have ills his load made up tip in the morning as now and then to stay at tit home and do liis his days work while the tile wagon was being taken to town in the electrical wagon train should it be necessary nece shary for lwi lai to go goto to town to see about the unloading lie could take liis his troger and rand road wagon and cover the dl distance in a it small fraction of the time that it would take him to drive it with hla its heavy wagon there would also be no limit to alie load which he lie could ship at one time except the capacity of his wagon the economies might be further extended by the general ownership of a it few wagons which could be used by a it number of farmers for shipment on different days the advantages of such a system are obvious they would do away almost entirely with the horses now needed to carry the farm produce to market fewer wagons would bo required and time for the farmer and his hands would be saved shipments could be ma demore quickly and in greater quantities the use of alie power from the trolley wire need not bo be limited to traction on the road the wire could be tapped for every farm and the power used tor for general farm purposes the mowing machines lDes could bidrawn by electricity instead of horses the tile could be done without the use of a H traveling steam engine with its expense for fuel and attendants the gang plows which now require rt beeam engine or four to six horses could bIl bt easily managed by electricity and all the plowing done more rapidly and with much imi expenditure of labor even butter could be churned by electricity and tho tile drudgery of farm work gener generally 1 ily re deuced new york sun still |
