Show iiy favor a protective tariff . IROTKCTIVU TARIFF. "The tariff is a tax, "sings the free trader; but a very strorjg refutation of this comes to light in the Last. At present tin-plate from Wales costs 34,15 per box, with a duty one cent per pound. Many of our tin-plate tin-plate dealers have lain in large supplies sup-plies at that rate, in order to avoid the increased duty of two cents per pound that will be charged on or after July 1, under the McKinley tariff; they having reasoned from a free trade standpoint, that this increased in-creased duty would materially increase in-crease the price of the article in ques tion. But now comes the Uoston Post, than which a no more enthusiastic Democratic journal can be found 111 cue t.ouniy, ani asserts that a tin-pla'e tin-pla'e jobber of that city has a standing stand-ing offer from the factories in Wales for tin plate to be delivered in any quantity for $3.35 per box, after July j, under the increased tariff. The only conclusion we can ar rive at, when looking at these figures is that we have been solely at the mere; of foreign monopolies, as is 0 ten the case under a low tariff or free trade. In tin-plate there has been no competition in this country and 1 e.n:e our market has been ! wholly at the mercy of foreigners, , ami they have made us pay for it! The increased tariff o'fers inducements induce-ments for the establishment of fac- cones or our own, and w t lin a year under the present tariff w' will predict pre-dict tin-j hte stl.ing in th s co int.y at a price that will astonish all thes who have been so opposed to the Uc Kinley tariff. This fact shows us, therefore, that a protective tariff does not increase the price, but it tends to lessen it I ever- time on articles tiiat can be j manufactured in this country. Fac! tories are thereby established in our own country.and competition woks its own results in a short time. Furthermore, Fur-thermore, the country is made strortei -. ..s.,lUt -.ututii-y 15 made strong financially, and lies at the mercy ot no foreign monopolies. Home markets mar-kets are furnished for products of lhe farm, and better profits are thereby there-by realized.
