barthen and beat heat of 0 the day the early pioneers pion eera from the east who bridged the streams and opened the roada roads through trackless wilds from the missouri river to the then sterile valleys of 0 utah and who have laid the foundation for the construction of a mighty might commonwealth an empire whose at star ar y will never set among those who have recently been gathered to their peaceful rest is mrs mary hedrick garner an octogenarian the relict of the late philip garner she was the daughter of 0 francis hedrick and elizabeth howard an and d was born in davia davis county north carolina september 25 when twenty years of age she waa was married to philip garner shortly alter after their marriage they removed to jackson county indiana In diada where they lived for or a number of 0 years daring during their residence in this state three children we were reborn born they subsequently removed to adame adams county where in the summer of 1841 mary 11 garner was baptized into the church of jesus christ of latter day sainto saints in 1841 1941 with her family she removed to nauvoo illinois where she remained until the exodus in the winter ot of 1840 1346 which expulsion from her peaceful home she shared in common with tha the whole church at that time with her family she reached council bluffs at the time the call was made by the government ot of the united sartes for five hundred men to march to 51 mexico exico to defend the sag fl ag of our nation her husband philip garnor garner volunteered and with the battalion participated drand in that famous historical expedition lie ile was absent from them fifteen months during which time sister garner was left with a family of eight the oldest of whom was a daughter fourteen years of age the next in age to her was a son who was sick and not expected to live the orders for the battal battalion lonto to march at once were imperative and the husband bad no time to provide any other shelter for the family except a can vass vase covered wagon but this was the common lot of thousands who had bad been expelled from their homes and left destitute in the land of wild beasts and indiana indians daring during the march of the battalion mr garner while on guard one very dark night h had a d the misfortune to fall into a well he fell across his musket breaking two of bis his ribs and also i flicking dieting other internal injuries he ile never fully recovered from the nl df feats of this fall until the day of his death which occurred twenty years ago in 1849 after the return of the battalion in company with her husband and children mother alother garner crossed the plains in captain george A smiths company on arriving la in utah they came north and settled where ogden city rit now is built more happy than wh when en ebe she was wa e e contributing on to the happiness of others her death occurred march 3 1802 1892 she was the mother of twelve children eight sons and four daughters daughter I 1 all of whom are living and have families she bad ninety two grand children and eighty tour four great 9 grand rand children ISS in all and her poste posterity rity is still increasing the
