Judge Zane (with anget) "See who it was that halloed and whittled in that way." Deputy United Stater Marshal Bush at once proceeded to make a search among the audience in the body of the hall, and a lew moments later brought forward a respectable dressed colored man who gave the name of E Gordon. Judge Zane asked him "Why did you make that noise?" Gordon (without displaying much ) "I niieiy clapped my hands this way, sir" (giving au illustra-tion of his method of demonstration.) Judge Zane (warmly) "You ought tt keep out of the Court room if you can-not beiiave yourself Men ought to art like men and not like childien. You are main a br room when yu c me here, a town meeting, or anything ut that kind. It shows great ignorance 01. the part of any man or woman who can act in this way in a Court of justice. The officer made another dive among the spectators, but did not succeed ii. securing a second victim. Gordon paid his tine and with a rather crest fallen look, A singular scene occured when the foregoing incident had passed 1 ver Many persons who had hitherto remain-ed behind as spectators elbowed then way to the front, surrounded ud e Powers and the now freed girl who stood by his side, and 111 a most endearing manner grasped his hands, at the:a:ne time showering upon him their hearty congratulations upon having fought to hard for his client's libel ty, and with a successful result. Miss Olson and her parents were also the recipients of warm congratulations, and came in for a lib-eral share of public sympathy. Ge.ieral approval of the veidict was openly ex-pressed. The ovation continued until the parties reached the street) where a large crowd had congregated to take a . glance at the parties as they left the building. Times:- - The case of Amar.da Olsen has been tried and the verdict rendeied and Miss Olson is again a free woman. The ury was out thirty-.'t- ve minutes, when they reached a unanimouse conclusion that Miss Olson was lustified in taking the life of Frank C. Hall. The verdict agreed w th the one already rendered byihe public and was received with great rejoicing. The HYAMS AFFAIR. It is sad commentary on the Lib-eral party ot Salt Lake City when one of the principal officials of its first administration stands convicted of either dishonesty or imcompet-ency.l- n the administration of public affairs one is as grave an offense as the other, and either always entails much confusion to the party respon-sible for its opportunity to assert it self. While all that could be done to lighten the blow was performed with dispatch, the men who are re-sponsible for Mt. Hyams' nomina-tion and consequent election, will find it no easy matter to clear themselves of connivance, and while the Mor-mon papers are not in a favorable positson to throw mud, they will throw it just the same-a- nd it will stick. It would seem, also, that there is something wrong in the po-lice department and it is hoped Liberals of Salt Lake will do well to heed its advice. We trust that the affair will prove a wholesome lesson to them and that machine politics and bossism will be give a back seat in future elections. Park Heetrd: TOTHECOMMISIOM To the Honorable, The Utah Com-mission. Gentlemen. I beg leave to report that I from your offije, received notices to be p t ed in regard to the municipal Election here with the instruction to erase, if too many offices were on the list and add if not enough. In older to comply therewith as I did not know how many offices the City is entitled to I went to ihe Mayor and he informed me that two years ago seven councilors were elected, hut onlv five were com-missioned, and therefore he thought five would be the number and so I posted the no ices aixord nfly, subsequently a caucus wss held and ; five councilors nominated but then a few dayt after-wards the Mayor ctme to me and taid he had cousulted the City's Attorney Judge Jacob Johnson, at Spring City.and was by him informed that by a ruling in the District Court it wat decided that 7 Councilors wtra the proper number for Cities of the c'ass Ephraim belonged to, I men told him if lie desired me to, I would change the five on the notice's to seven and he said he did, and so I chang-ed the numbtt to tveo AJpubl c mee nj was called, and held last Saturday mg hi the mayor stating the reasons why the meeting was called but the majority of those present decided to take rro action 111 regard to nominating any m.e pei-so-but at the Election a number of votes were cast for seven councilors, ilic additional two being Henry Green and Peter Schwa Ibe. Pleasant, who made a will leaving his property to a citizen of this city, John Erickson by name. The estate was sold out to day, and when the debts are settled, there will probably be something like a thousand dollars left for the lucky legatee. Mr. Jones has no blood relatives in Utah, though rumor has it that he had children in New York City too poor to con test the will.
