Show IT IS WORTH considering the many conscientious voters of utah who have been led into an acceptance of democratic pretensions and assertions concerning tariff would do well to con aider alder just now what relation thosa those pretensions and assertions bear to the actual facts it will be remembered by our readers that democrats were claiming last year that the mckinley bill would swell the surplus unreasonably and that its tariff schedule was a robber the tact fact Is that the free list under the mckinley McK ioley bill is larger than under the mills democratic bill the surplus has not been swelled the importations free of duty last year were larger than ever before in the history of f the country not only in actual amount but langr also in proportion to the total of than during any other importations years since 1860 so thabit the tariff is a lax tax the mckinley bill reduces taxa tion very much more than the mills bill proposed to do democrats Demo crata claimed that by the me mc rialey bialey bill our foreign commerce Commer Cei would be cour coar the tact fact is that our foreign commerce was greater last year than ever before democrats claimed that the mckinley bill by protecting us from the pauper made surplus of europe would deprive us of a foreign market to just that extent in other words we could not sell more than we bought the fact is that oar our exportation i were larger last year than ever before with a tremendous balance of trade in our favor in december alone we sold more of goods than we bought democrats claimed that tinplate tin plate would not be and could not be made in this country the fact is that over thirty tinplate tin plate works have been established since the mckinley bill passed twenty of the factories are already in actual operation the works of mr abst at fit louis are alone turning out awen ty tour four tons daily ot of tinplate tin plate at a direct coat cost in wages per week of 1800 and at an indirect wages coat cost many times as great in the preparation of the steel sheets before they reach the tinplate tin plate factory after asserting that tinplate tin plate would not and could not be made in america the democrats with their usual inconsistency claimed that the robber manufacturers manufacturer in this country would put the whole amount of the tinplate tin plate tariff finto into their own breece breeches es pockets and that the price of tinplate tin plate would be kept op up to its former figure with the new duty added the fact is that as ws soon as the tinplate tin plate manufacturers rs of wales weiss found that america meant business they reduced the price of their goods and today to day tinplate tin plate is sell loft lag in this country at an advance of only one fourth of a cent per pound over its old price and even that slight difference is belag being steadily red reduced need with the certainty that within two years more tinplate of american manufacture will be selling for less than we ever paid for the imported article democrats claimed that the advanced duty daty on tinplate tin plate would increase the price of the work ingmans emans dinner pail the fact Is that the dinner pall as well as all other goods of has been reduced in price in all the retail stores of the east since the new tariff was established Democrats claimed that the mckinley bill would raise the prices of all kinds of goods in all parts of the country the fact is that since that measure went into effect nearly all the manufactures in common use have been reduced in retail price we do not yet feel that reduction in utah to the same extent that it is felt in the ent east bat but it is coming our way as fast as possible below Is a table showing the average of retail prices for the articles named at the dates named which prices have been gathered from all the states and territories of the union it will be oboe observed ved that out of the 56 articles mentioned only one Is higher than before the passa passage go of the mckinley bill all the rest are lower the one exception is the famous pearl button and as readers of STANDARD will remember an american manufacturer u fac who was induced to go into this industry by the protection afforded to it baa has juat just perfected a method by which the cost of production w will III be materially decreased and before two years shall have passed away america will not only make her own pearl buttons but will sell them cheaper ban than the imported goods were ever sold in n this country the first column shows prices in 1857 near the close of our last free trade period the second column gives prices n 1889 a year before the passed assed the next column gives prices in 1890 during daring the campa campaign ignot of last year while the last column gives present prices rices uc r ber ARTICLES 1857 1889 1890 1891 axe 1 49 i 0 92 t 0 83 binding twine ib lb 14 14 11 Blan klets pair 6 83 i 4 09 3 70 bine line shirting yd f 11 11 09 boota
