democracy at the republican convention in this city the position of the party waa was set forth as follows we believe not only in national and territorial legislation for the protection and encouragement of home industries bat but also that the city government a in ev every proper manner encourage enco in int t dut tries lee ry within our city limits we are in favor of an economic yet progressive government for our city we hold that the officers of our city should be men of integrity whose aim will be to perform their duties for the general good of the whole people and not merely tor lor the benefit of any faction while we hold that a fair compensation should be paid for services actually performed for the city by its officer officers yet we believe that the salaries now pad paid to the mayor and for the services at present required of them are recklessly extravagant we believe that the city council should pay at least two dollars per day for a mans labor and at least three dollars frei per day for the labor of a man and team the public works and that eight hours should constitute a days work we also believe in logan work for I 1 logan ogan workmen we believe that the city should open streets in the suburbs when necessary tor for the convenience of the people and that a proper proportion of the moneys expended on streets should be applied on the outer streets of the city and the neld field roads roade within the corporate limits we beleve believe that tho i irrigation gation districts owning canals running through this city are entitled to the manai management ement and con arol of the flame same aa as well as the water flowing therein and that the municipal p ai government should control only by g gen oral ordinance in the same man manner or as ii it controls railroads running through th this Is city we are opposed to the granting to individuals divi duals or private corporations of franchises for water works and we believe that the city government as soon as ita its finances or credit will permit should put in a system of water works ample ampt a for the needs of toe the city and that tha water should be supplied to the citizion as nearly free as proper service willber will permit we believe that franchises should be granted for street railways but bat that the rights of the c city and citi citizens zons should be carefully guarded gua rde yd and that those obtaining the franchise should be held to a strict compliance with the requirements of tho same name these resolutions expressed republican ideas in regard to local issues exactly no explanation or apology Is necessary now for the sake of comparison for a short description of the democratic convention etwas it was moved by fred turner that members occupy one
