Show TWO GIRLS LONO LONG JOURNEY JO hundred miles la in wagon barough mountainous mountains Monn tiina san francisco francino examiner thero there aro are two young ladies ladys spending a few weeks in this c city alty who have recently made a remarkable journey they are miss aliss mary Jac of java lod lodge e hamp shire england and miss emma hartley of junction city tex the town of junction ca city 13 ii is is nearly two hundred miles from forn the Alex mexican ican border the entire distance lu to tho the city of mexico from that a place ace being about 1000 milea miles wagon and a team of texas horses were purchased and all arrangements tor for the trip had been perfected early in last september in tho the wagon were stored a complete camping outfit and a email small amount of provisions it being the intention of tho the luhcs ladies to procure the necessary supply of eatables from people alone along the line of their journey the provisions taken along were only to be used in case of necessity the only firearms carried by the ladies were a braco brace of pistols the rho country lying between junction city and piedras degras where they crossed tho the aitio grando grande river in mexico ji 13 a desolate mountainous oua ous region tho the only in habitants being ranchmen ranchman ranch men the habitations being at intervals inter vali of from twenty five fito to fifty miles tho the journey to the ilio rio grande river occupied four days it was at the mexican border that tho the girla girls met suet with their first obstacle they found that the mexican duties on their corves and wagon would coat cost them more than a new outfit they conferred as to what would be the beat best thing for them to do under the circumstances and finally they decided to despatch their own team and wagon baek to junction ci city ty chis was done and they crossed cros over the bridge to piedras negras degras on foot and purchased another out h fit in that city and again set act out on their journey of 1400 miles overland aerland to the mexican blex ican capital the journey to monterey was made over mountain trails but they were beset with no severe difficulties they wera were treated with universal courtesy and respect by the natives and were given every assistance asked by whom they met they were prepared for danger and adventure but in this they were disappointed disappoint ea the most thrilling incident of tho the trip being the riding of ofa a drunken soldier into their tent by mistake the astonished but courteous blex mexican ican quickly retired with profuse apologies for bis his intrusion in the higher altitudes altitude 3 they experienced perien ced some dis comforts owing to the chilly nights and the scarcity of wood and coal for cam camping ping they passed through sections of the country which had never before been penetrated or traversed by any foreigner and tho the astonish merit of the natives was very amusing every night of the 10 journey u aney which occupied nearly three h ace months was spent in their camp tent alono alone and unprotected travelled by tho the way of monterey daltillo saltillo Sal tillo san luis potosi and pachuca at pachuca they spent several days visiting the mines ironworks and reducers they spent several daya days in the city of mexico and started to mako make make their return journey journe by y overland but owing to g the e severe weather experienced on the uplands they were compelled to abandon their team and wagon at san luis potosi and finish their trip by rail but determined to enjoy the um surpassed climate and scenery of Al mexico exico to the utmost they travel led a good part of the way to this city on tho the locomotive |
