llie the hint pilot it was some timo time after 8 last night before the special meeting of the chamber of commerce was called to order by director ridgely Kid gely the chairman stated that the object of the session was to hear reports of the various committees appointed appoint edat at last meeting secretary Mc read tho following report redart of the committee of the chamber of commerce appointed fob feb ili determine the value of the iron plant plaat on twenty first street wo we are of the ills opinion that tho the land at a low estimate estinia te ia is worth and nd with the water and track facilities will boon soon be worth double that amount aa as it is a natural location lor for the location of in fact one of the members of the committee is la willing to give 1000 for an aero acro of it we took a brick contractor mr calvert to examine the brickwork of 0 the stac atack k and he be found better and sounder bounder brick in it than can be purchased here today to day and in lk good ca capacity e ity would cost and the answer mab had been een that the best it could be purchased for at PAtta pittsburg burg would be the two reports were ordered filed my mr I 1 E brown stated that the ol 01 old d fur furnace n ace could turn out from ten to fi fifteen I 1 te en tons per day as the cupola ru pole had been EO so constructed some discus sion was indulged in regarding the capacity of various smelters shelters sm elters sir mr ridgely stated that sir mr johnson had been appointed a epe aps cial committee of one to give a detailed estimate of the coat of smelting smelling sm elting iron fron ore in ogden and the chamber would now hear the gentle mans report mr johndon then read the following report I 1 have the honor to submit the following report aa as to costs ot of smelting smelling sm elting iron in oden from or ores es contiguous and available thereto some of the tile items are necessarily lly approximate as nothing but an actual test can disclose the actual cost in the main the figures are sufficiently accurate to furnish a safe basis for your purposes which ia Is to determine upon the advisability vis of building reduction works in ia this C city ty for handling the superior iron ores of the adjacent mountains the iron ores in this vicinity are chlell chiefly hematite and the the former is the most valuable and is found in immense ledges or veins forty feet wide mining Is thus reduced to a minimum coat as the ore can be taken out about as cheap as stone can be quarried 1 d under the most favorable conditions ta us the ore is to almost pure oxide to of I 1 iron in tact fact so free from elements that when assays essays have been handed to eastern iron smelters shelters sm elters they have questioned the tile assays essays and expressed doubts as to the existence of such valuable ores in the world being free from phosphorus with only a blight slight trace of sulphur or silica and no tin tanum or zinc elements usually found in iron ores our hematite requires no fluxing flexing except lime and fund sand and smil amel tinz lm Is as timple in process as burning lime or making charcoal this ore yields forn f orn om 48 per cent to 53 per cent pure iron the other class claw of ores the spec ular ore la also available it con bairs a email small per cent of sulphur silica and phosphorus this ore maybe may be need used with the hematite in mixing charges for the blast thus avoiding the expense of sand while owing to the elements mentioned it will not make good steel it makes a superior class of iron tor for general utility i ty 1 when the iron works of thia this city were in la operation eight years a ago go many d disadvantages lead vant airee had to be contended with the immense acal fields of crested butte in western colorado and of utah were not opened and the cost of mcconnel tille ville coke was such as to exclude it altogether hence tho the fuel used wa was charcoal and it cost on an average avera g D of 16 90 00 for each ton of pig ir iron n turned dout out ore cost 6 per ton delivered whereas now it could be laid down at half that hat price and Vos possibly sibly one otle third those figures even at such disadvantage the smelter turned out pig iron at a net cost of almost 32 per ton the estimated cost of turning out pig iron today to day from a ten ton stack would be as follows 2 ora to be per cent pure 3 do im 6 00 4 per ton 6 W 11 labor I 1 1 I I 1 00 toll total 14 1160 be these are outside figures and the estimate is is made on the basis of a ten ton stack with witha a twenty ton fur race the item of labor would be re deuced about fifty per percent cent as it would require only the addition of cheap la bor or as the skilled managers foreman Machin machinist lat at and bookkeeper coul could 1 handle bandle dle three or tour four furnaces as well aa as one the freight on ft it ton of pig iron from the east 1 abt to utah common points is about 21 gayou bo you readily see that with a market price only equal to the present freight tariff with a twenty ton stack running thero there would be a net profit to tho tile business of per day ay or per month or per annum sly knowledge of the cost of smelt ere built for handling precious veta metals 10 which are necessarily more complicated haying having the moat mont refractory ores to handle leads me to conclude that in view of of the market at our command an iron reduction plant here consisting of a twenty ton toll stack running upon the superior ores of our milles nea would be able to yield as a net I 1 I 1 I 1 a profit r fi t during the first year of ita its operation the entire coat cost of 0 the plant just what auch such a plant would cost I 1 am unable to state with all necessary buildings and stacks I 1 do not believe eve it would cost and that too w when her constructed on the moat most approved and modern plans the basis upon which I 1 found thia this estimate Is the cost of reduction works tor for handling colorado galena and refractory orea ores in III fact I 1 havo have added a large per cent for unforeseen contingencies another important item which wh ch yuu you must not omit is that of a market could you finzi find sale for the output of a twenty ton stack thia this would approximate tons annually allowing J for shortage in daily output of pig iron you could not hope to enter the coast markets except for high quality iron and steel as southern and eastern iron can be laid down by shipping it around the horn at a price which 6 huts out all the superiority of this iron on the other liand hand would doubtless give it a limited timi ted market even against these odds montana wyoming idaho utah and nevada would still ba be open to you as a market while as to the demands of this intermountain inter mountain region I 1 am cot not posted you yon can all beadil readily y seo see that with euch such iron here stove factories would spring up and a hundred other products of the factory factor would be matlo made which would create I 1 a demand for many euch such furnaces it would seem that the only thing necessary to insure the success of the enterprise ter prise is an intelligent and forcible presentation of the facts to eastern capital A B Joir JOHNSON sir mr maguiro asked to have mr brownile Brow browns lile views on the cost ot of manufacturing fac turing iron mr air brown elated stated that be did not think the cost would exceed 16 15 p per pr r ton ag as the facilities were much improved ue he said that some of tha the iron run out oat on the former occasion bad had been sent to the central pacific shops at sacramento and the word had bad come hack back that the railroads would take all that could ba be smelter emel smelt ted ed they are now retina the metal from washington and the quality ia is very bad lie ile could not gt any pig aroa here for leia lots lei a than 30 per ton at the of mr bir 11 maguire laguire mr brown stated that Pit pittsburg g parties ties had paid said that the iro iron a amel smelter smelted te tat from ogden ored orea would mako make the best of steel mr johnson thought some one should make a move toward the organization of a company for the purpose of 0 smelting smelling sm elting the ore enough talk bad been indulged in mr jones su that a committee be appointed to solicit subscriptions script ions of stock in the gom company pany mr brown said in regard to the location of the smelter be was of the opinion that it should be placed here I 1 in ogden in order to save time and money as the furnace is neatly ready for operation mr mir enoch F farr arr was of the same opinion as mr grown brown that the old smelter and plant should be accepted and thereby save much money and retain the fine water power mr maguire stated that as the smelting smelling sm elting of iron was not injurious to human life he thought ogden should get i be plant mr ridgely thought a committee 11 should hould bo be appointed and be instructed ta to arm themselves with a compilation of the advantages of the iron industries and the am sm smelling smelting elting ling of the same lie at some length showed up the plans be bad had conceived in regard to the matter and was of the opinion that local capital should work the plant in preference to leaving it to eastern men and the chamber should yet get down to specific facts A B johnson anson said that in regard to hs report of the actual cost of smelt ing ore he be bad had procured his information from every available source and if any experienced iron man waa was present he would not change a figure figare in making estimates it was wait not policy to take the figures on the side of profit an and d consequently he be bad had ol 01 ko doubled aed his prices and the public would not be deceived in the outcome mr brown thought mr J johnsons estimate oce one of the fairest eyer ever made and waa as perfect as could ba be done by any committee mr ridgely stated that the tile capitalists of f ogden were not all present and bis his idea waa was to present to them by a committee of business men mea a compilation of facts such as would give duera all confidence in the tile project mr air johnson moved that the officers of the chamber select a committee to prepare the facts and present them to the public it wan wait amended that Ble george F brown and john Q cannon bo be placed on oa the committee carried as amended mr ridgely stated that tho the headquarters of the union pacific had just been removed to thia this city and arid be thought the chamber should as a body place itself in communication with tha the superintendent and open the doors doore to the company and the officers it wi waa I 1 s a duty he be said which ogden owes to the railroad and herself chamber adjourned until friday evening |
