reading of the minutes the following reports were presented for action REPORTS the mayor and the city engineer reported that they bad had visited salt lake on the paving question th they e y bad had found but little paving ng in use and that only of california bituminous rock and the california Stra diment asphalt neither of these had been laid long enough to determine their endurance butane but abe former appeared appe rod preferable the stone and brick paving in 9 could not be investigated in utah their investigation had not gone tar far enough to w warrant arrant any recommendation the committee recommended th estrict enforcement of the sewer connection ordinance ordinances and that the paving investigation be continued placed on file the mayor and engineer being instructed to continue their labors on streets the committee reported that all deeds for the 0 opening pening of thirtieth had been secured d and recorded and the street supervisor had been ordered to remove the fences also recommended commended rec that the matter of at fencing in a part of twenty fourth west of weber be referred to the city attorney for proper action adopted on claims the committee lancaster and richard leek have entered into a contract with W 8 to furnish the brick and do the brick work on the city 1 jail I forthe for the eum sum of 2217 and that the they cadalso bad also entered into a contract with mr smead to furnish the brick and do the brick work on the fire station for or the sum of 1500 in round numbers third we find that the taking of these contracts by mr calvert and bis his firm Is and was forbidden by law section 1770 of the compiled lawa laws ol 01 1838 fourth we find that mr calvert when requested by mr hill to ta enter into contract to furnish brick and to do the brickwork brick work on the jil jill stated that be he did not know whether he or bis his firm could legally do such work he being a member of the Council bu that be would consult an attorney fifth we find that be he consulted david evans bis his attorney who advised him that that in his opinion there would be no violation of the statutes of ut b h or the ordinances of the city smead to take the bid mr air bucher told smead that bo he had made a mistake and smead told stevenson abathe that he should have tha the contract lor for brick as his bid was the lowest eighth the anderson pressed brick co says we bad had a 91 C conversation with mr smead about five days after bis his bid was accepted I 1 he ae smead told us that he had not t yet at made a contract for the brick work wnm or k TV we told him that we would furnish the brick and labor as per contract tor for the sum of 1350 and that we would give him a certain amount of our white brick for trimming such as
