Show MINES ARE POSSIBLE I 1 and ogden to have some good ones close df by I 1 I 1 THE NOU boohm nil FULL OF bit but railia mines cannot ba be lade milt concentration of effert add and a judi clon outlay of soney I 1 E D TUB THE STANDARD the in tere 8 t in the mining industry which was aroused and q quickened ilic bened by the discoveries of 0 mineral minor la in la plata district augurs well for the future days development loument of that industry in weber and adjoining counties in northern utah where vast bodies of rich ore are tire believed to be locked up in natures rock ribbed sto storehouse re housep only awaiting the application of well directed efforts backed by capital to bring it to the surface and make it subservient to the uses of man 1 here in ogden through the years we have been claiming that we have rich mines of iron and of the precious metals and in proof of the assertion specimens of a great variety of ores have been displayed in the chamber of commerce and other places where they would attract attention and perhaps cause invest investigation ga by capitalists seeking investments in the mines but that is about as far as the work of development has h as gone on the many promising prospects which have from time to time acts been an discovered in the immediate neighborhood of this city of great expectations and claimed magnificent natural resources in fact at the present time notwithstanding that present hundreds and perhaps thousands of locations have been made and recorded there is not in the whole county of weber one claim that has I 1 been sufficiently developed to demonstrate that it will become a I 1 producing mine there is not yet a producing mine or one that has been prospected to any great extent in this county cuaty no one can truthfully say that we have mines when there are only prospects the better way ia is to state acts facts and endeavor to enlist capital to help bell open one or more claims which promis well that would do more to make burc our claims of the richness of oar our mountains gool tha than to a all 11 tha the newspaper talk or the displaying playing di of specimens upon which wa have heretofore relied almost entirely your year correspondent during the past ten years has spent tima tim san and d money in prospecting for leads of gold silver copper etc and is even now interested in a few claim claims that give promise of being cold god when properly up and I 1 wish w nh to go on record as one who his he great faith in the mineral wealth of northam northern utah and especially of webar county but fine spun theories and delving for knowledge between the leaves of blots treating of 0 mineralogy geology and kindred subjects will not develop mines although altho uga a klow knowledge 1 ledge of things is good to h have ave and a great help to the miner and prospector especially the latter it will be conceded by the most pronounced pessimist that the development of one oue good producing mine would be a grand thing for the junction city every cilicia would be benefited either directly or indirectly I 1 have heird board this statement made ten thousand the usand times by citizens of oden ogden and I 1 believe it I 1 know that it is a fact but its iteration and reiteration have nat na developed and will not develop the mining interest and make good our claim to the possession of mines A co concentration n cent ration of effort and energy is urgently demanded and it ia is with a view to securing this that this communication muni cation is made at this time fhe friter will consider himself well repaid it be he shall succeed in awakening awake nine bis big fellow citizens to a realization of the prime necessity of doing something practical instead of scathe scattering ring and wasting their means in ia merely scratching the surface of the ground or knocking off specimens spec imena from the droppings crop pings of ledges mining is a business aa as legitimate as es any other and also like any other business busi nesa it must ba be carried on in a systematic and business like manner tofte to its pursuit must be applied the same business principles that are applied in the successful conduct of any other legitimate pursuit or calling and when this be done the chances of a u access are equal to those of any p ather ther enterprise in which men invest and and muscle and intelligent well d erected effort yes yea even more than tha iltha tha for a good gold pd or ora ilver mine is R an endless source of wealth to its possessors nd a good thing to I 1 have and to hold on oil to As I 1 have eaid said this whole section of country is full fall of shallow prospect boles holes many of them having been sunk on good surface then abandoned when the hundreds or th thousands meanda of dollars on some or two wo or in more ore ot of them would in all have made a mine or tw two 0 and brought to ogden smelting smelling sm elting and redaction reduction works and caused the in investment vestment of much capital in this branch of indue industry tr y this s plan of procedure will have to t 0 bo b a adopted and the sooner it bo done the better will it be for ogden and every one who is interested in having her progress a and march at the head bead of the procession i in la plata the promising new mining district in cache county of which ogden is the natural outlet and point ll 11 at of supply one great company eos nas been organized for working the properties which they have secured by purchase the members of his this company are 1 0 O and salt lake men and they are going about their work in euch such a manner as to insure success euc cees their interests are centered principally in logan and cache county and it is not either reasonable or natural mat to suppose that their energies will be directed to toward ward tha the building balk ling UP of ogden but that is what we want it is what we can have by de do To loping the mineral resources reco of our own coun tyby by opening one or more wore of the claims wl which itch rive give such good surface Indica indications tiong of being valuable vald ble F every very mining man knows where close to ogden and tributary thereto are fine appearing prospects lu in ogden canyon are borne some in 10 the mountains directly east and northeast of the city are some in all the canyons running down into ogden valley alley v from the east and southeast are some and on the side of the range ra between the upper end ot of canyon and the head of north fork canyon are scores of claims that give good indications of being beina rich this the north fork district has alace the discoveries at L Ls plata attracted the he attention of practical miners and prospectors many of whom aie are even ol 01 the favorable now 1110 w taking advantage I 1 weaber to examine the country practically without any exception they pronounce the indications food for rich and permanent mineral I 1 caring bearing ledges and quite a number of claims have been taken take jup within the 1 llo P past t month if 11 surface indications count eine for anything if il large and well d defined d ledges of ric rich h quartz in a elate slate and granite formation formation are evidences of bidden in mines aes then the north fork country Is a good country and will justify the expenditure of consid considerable enible money in developing some of the prospects prospect a a already located A few days ago the writer visited the willard gold A silver mining district where are situated the claims known as the alpine group three in number owne owned d by W A hunt J biaas J clayton dil ll 11 beardsley eard sley 31 buchmiller J 0 armstrong 0 E hill and U H all of 0 ogden these claims were located nearly three years ago and have practically lain idle ever since they have not been developed only the assessment work ry to bold hold them has been done the surface of the immense ledge has been exposed in several places place along salong its course and ore is shown in all the openings thus made the showing g made will fully justify the e necessary to t the f e development ol 01 the prospect and t there h ore is hardly a doubt that the foot tunnel which is to be run ran on the ledge will show up a first class mine the orete ore is richin rich in silver gold copper and lead this writer understands that the owners of this promising a 9 property have secured foreign cap capital to doz do a certain amount of development work for an interest in the property this will mutually benefit all the parties in interest the alpine group of claims are situated on the top of the willard creek ridge near the bead head of the north fork of ogden river about abou t five miles east of the utah northern railroad olber other claims on that side of the ridge and north of the group are the august flower the butterfly and the little low these claims and others are in box elder county on the north fork side of the ridge which is the dividing line between box E elder I 1 and weber count counties iea anda boat 2000 feet from the little low la Is the lone star claim owned by IV A hunt haut of ogden this claim is in weber county on the surface it showed a six inch vein ol 01 ore A few shots opened up an eighteen inch vein and the indications are that the vein will widen out as depth is attained on it mr hunt intends to d di some work on the claim this fall assays essays showing from forty to ounces silver and from 5 3 to 10 gold have been made the north extension of the lone star is the elkhorn showing the same class of hiell grade ore but not being work worked zd the south cite extension nalon of the lone ions star is the mary alberta owned by john Q cannon E A Littlefi littlefilld ald 0 J A J hepburn and J II 11 uy biyer er who are also the owners of four 0 other t ber claims on the same side of the ridge west of the alpine group is the cinnabar ow owned ned by william frew of hooper south of the cinnabar is the black prince owne owned by morris Cham chamberlian berlia of ogden on oa this there is a good vein iria in a granite and slate formation and a shaft ten feet deep the apex owned by cannon and others ia is about one third of a mile southeasterly from the lian lan S ir and shows a vein of the s same m e class of ore its southern exten extension n ia the western knight owned by the same parties dr dir felshaw and william hall of ogden own the morgan located about 2000 feet east 0 of I 1 the alpine and anti they are working their claim which shows show good gool ore ora the berkshire in I 1 the he earne me vicinity is owned b by charles wheat a union pacific engineer ene ineer and a ton foot cut has been made on the claim the hamilton is owned by mallory of boston other claims in weber counte are the green monster copper king hidden tr treasure basure and others whose names are not recalled all of these claims are within ten miles of the eden postoffice post office and every one of them the writer believes bal ieves may be made a paying mine while spending a few days lathe in the district recently and wandering over the mountains the writer was impressed with the number of location stakes discovered in every direction many of these claims have been improperly located and could not be lawfully held in case of a contest by adverse claimants the law on the subject is plain and unmistakable and those who desire to avoid trouble should strictly c ll 11 comply with the laws of the uni united ta states and the laws of the territory and mining district that the north fork district will become became prominent in the near future dogs not admit of any doubt and with your permission mr editor I 1 will state a few facts relating to the law and embodying decisions de chlon of the com commissioner m missioner iss ioner of the general land office A conflict of titles Is a bad thing I 1 for or an any I 1 camp and it ia Is hoped there wilf will be nothing of the kind on the north fork aa As the logon logan journal says of la plata and so I 1 say of the north fork that while there can be no reasonable doubt that rich mines will be opened hereabouts there is one great drawback the number of claims lo 10 bated by individuals and corpora tiona prospects are BO so numerous numero oa and eo so many seem to be afraid that they will lose a little that they take up everything they can though it must be apparent that bat the present owners will never bg b able to develop t them hem all and there are too many good pros peels awaiting capital justify the paying 0 of hevy heavy prices for or any the interest of 0 the country will be much better sub served by holding few low claims and thus thug afford more room lor for others while there can ba be no money for any on one in that the owners cannot develop and which no one eke else will buy it la not to be expected that every one will be perfectly familiar w with th the mining laws although the presume tion is that the locator of a claim on oil the public domain understands what be he la IS doing 4 anz and nd what is required of him the first step to be taken to secure a claim is to make a location and the law most positively myo that no DO location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of a vein viela within the limits of the claim located that teems seems to be very plain the law requires that the location shall be distinctly marked on the ground 0 ll 11 n so 0 that its it boundaries may ff ee r readily e adill y tra traced cod and each a description made of the claim by re ferrence to some 6 ome natural object or permanent par manent monument I 1 ent as will identify it that ls quite plain the he proper way to designate the lode lines of a claim is by three lode line mon monuments or stakes one at each end and one in the center the four lour corners of the claim should be marked by stakes staked or monuments that maybe may be easily bean seen and found the monuments to be tie not less than three feet foot in bight by tiro two fet lost in width at the base bage if takes stakes are used they should be not lees less than throb feet in light hight nor lees less than tour four inches in diameter either round or t quare after having made A louA tiva according to law in the th proper r 0 P 11 r manner I 1 as above described descrIbe dt ae the 1 locator c tr sharill I 1 file a copy of the location notice with the I 1 recorder of the mining district I 1 and have the same recorded and receive of 0 the recorder a corti certificate fichte of the recording under the seal of sa said id recorder the law of utah requires the recorder of a mining district to keep a real and impress it upon certificates etc then if the assessment work be done by the locator he be should go before the th recorder and make an affidavit certifying to that fact and receive the recorders certificate also under bis big seal the law ahat requires that t worth of work shall be done on a ca claim aim each year until a patent issues the first year commences on the first day 0 of fi january a ary succeeding the date of of location and ends on the of december following unless the work be done within that time the claim becomes subject to relocation A question which is to often asked is can one of the locators of a mining claim upon which the necessary amount of expenditures for the year have not been made relocate the same as abandoned property in his h n ova own name and for himself only answer the commissioner of the united states general lan land office doffice has decided that it the law governing possessory right has not been complied with the claim reverts to the united states is relegated to the public u bile domain and may be relocated ay by the original locator or anybody else the amendment to the mining law introduced into congress at the last session by senator stewart of nevada prohibits this but as 88 the am amendment has n not ot yet become a law the decision of the commissioner still holds good that is the one bad feature of the present mining |
