Show AT THE CITY HALL HILL the benefit entertainment for the II 11 E university last list evening mrs mary calhoun dixon recited at the city ball the occasion was the 31 E university benefit entertainment the room waa was email small but fairly well filled mr loar did the honors of the occasion ia in presiding during the evening the pro gramme opened with a 9 song rong entitled casta cast diva by mrs george metcalf of salt lake on the encore she sang bo peep which proved quite taking mrs dixon was introduced to the audience arn id applause and recited the trials of a wife whose husband studied Elod elocution ution 11 oa on the recall she gave give the trial scene in the 77 merchant of venice in this selection she proved herself master of her art the changes blatti of attitude from the at first vindictive then cringing to the haughty tal y yet merciful demeanor of portia the solicitude of gratiano and the resignation of antonio and the voice in which she represented each were as though seen during the presentation of the groat great play by stars of the theatrical profession her tier shylock especially y was true to the impersonation by the best actors the voice being excellent to imitate shylocks Shy locks guttural pronunciation nuncia nun clation tion is exceedingly difficult for a woman but it proved no bard hard task for mrs dixson mr EW waite then bang sang ah ab so pure rendering as the encore thoa thou art like unto a flower he ile was well received by the audience she had cosiness business with the boss mason the actors story and how ruby raby played were numbers given by mrs dixon in which she fully portrayed her power of changing from the pathetic t to 0 the humorous the sublime to the rl ridiculous di tilou her tier recitals should be heard by all of agdens citizens and when she returns it is to be hoped that the opera house may give an excellent and appreciative audience miss min lezatte sang dear heart and in a sweet manner rendered the last rose of summer as the encore mrs metcalf who is noted for her sweet singing nging ei rendered titania falth ith pleasing effect and with the winning smile she always wears in public favored the audience with ith my liddie laddie on the recall the entertainment was excellent throughout and it ia is but a pity that so many failed to participate in the musical and literary treat offered tor for a good purpose |
