interrupted many times by applause 7 immediately after the reconvening of the convention at 2 p in the permanent manent chairman gear was introduced and made a brief speech predicting party success on the tariff and local issues the nomination of state officers was then declared in order and the convention declared that no nominating speeches should be permitted III bitted for governor hiram 0 wheeler of Ode boldt SAC county was nominated on ion the first ballo great enthuse aam he was called upon for a speech and returned thanks briefly for the honor conferred upon him lor for lieutenant gover governor norv george van houten of taylor county da do unexpected strength and was nominated on the sec ind ballot d defeating the present incumbent me mr r for supreme judge 8 M weaver of iowa falls was bomin nominated ted on the third ballot defeating chief justice beck the present incumbent and other candidates henry sabin the present superintendent of 0 public instruction and frank T campbell the present railroad commissioner were renoi by acclamation A telegram of greeting was read from the secretary of the national republican league and one signed b by y john jay president of the committee protested against the plank endorsing prohibit lion and offered a substitute favoring such a system of local option under high license as will af at ford protection and prohibition to from the republican party is an effort to introduce true temperance in every part of the state henry S wilcox of polk county argued against the substitute and senator lawrence of sioux city favored it devised the general sentiment of the convention vent ven tion lon however was clearly against the substitute and on roll call it v was as defeated to and tremendous applause greeted the announcement of the prohibition victory on motion of one delegate that the platform as reported by the committee be a rising there were noa no opposing i votes v 0 tea and tho the platform was adopted p t e antu unanimously n ani on the subject of prohibition the platform says we have no apologies to offer the people nor the ilia democratic party for the republican record in the con conspicuous a ious issue laade in the state campaign this yea year in the interests of true temperance and under the laws of iowa enacted by the representatives of its sovereign people the saloon waa w as made an outlaw in this state we charge that the outlaw lias has bad had the patronage counsel and pr protection tion oi of the democratic party that the democratic party aa as it baa hits won power hag has nullified the law defied the authority of the state and the expressed fillol will of the people and that now an appeal la is made to the electors of the whole state for the approval of this lawless work we recognize that the law against the de defiance flance of law subordination against insubordination the state ct cf iowa against the demo cratic cratie party we recognize that the issue is between the interests of true temperance and the freedom and rule of indiscriminate traffic we renew our alliance to the people of iowa and submit to them the determination of the issue recognizing that the ilia
