citizens I 1 assembled this thin tuesday even evening ing k april let 1690 1890 to consider the question of a new government building build inz 4 for the city the follo following resolutions Z were unanimously adopted with the I 1 request that you present them to the 1 proper congressional committee during I 1 your visit to washington I 1 ii resolutions recent events in oden have demonstrated a greater and I 1 more pressing necessity for a government I 1 building suitable to the present I 1 I 1 I 1 and rapidly growing business demantle demands of the city alq and it ib ib evident that tile congress of of the united states is rather slow to tu recognize the need of 1 this great commercial acid and railroad I 1 center of the intermountain inter mountain coui chui try I 1 I 1 for proper facilities for the transaction of the public bu inese iness covering a v vast as t I 1 extent of important territory now the therefore be it I 1 by the ogden chamber of commerce Comme ice and the citizens in special session assembled first that we recommend to bis his excel excellency lincy arthur L thomas governor of the territory of utah that he I 1 frese present ut this matter in its stron strongest geFt light to the proper committee in congress I 1 and urge upon then them by all means in his power pro prompt M t and effect enec tive legislative action teasing tending towards I 1 the eba early erection of a suitable and 0 com commodious tons 1 government building in oden ogden second that the reason for earl early congressional I 1 action t are cogent to wit wit r economy n my to the government the inadequate I 1 ad quarters of the U united states officials c e I 1 g great inconvenience to the citizens of 0 the country in utah and adjacent teril territory tory and the an important city b and reg region i on by continuing the unsatisfactory administration of go government v affairs here m which last condition I 1 is solely caused by the failure 11 of the government to provide suitable buildings third that the condition ie Is not ight and should be speedily fremed r led by the erection of a building of sufficient capacity to accommodate all the federal but bu lucinese iness cinese for the next twenty five years at the present time the poet office internal revenue a aad pd quarter quartermasters masters department and uni united t ed states district courture cour court tare are administered in buildings totally unsuited to the requirements and mean er in in their appArt ments than bull buil lings need used for similar cupoo in many pa eastern stern cities ol 01 inhabitant that the rentals of these buildings they may be comparatively moderate now will advance with rapidly advancing property values I 1 n this growing city and will reach an all aggregate in twenty five ye or sufficient to build a large a and nd costly building I 1 fourth that since it ie is manifest that ogden will have to be given a federal building in in tho the near future it is wise wise economy to begin its construction now while a conveniently located S site to can be secured at moderate cost whereas should it be deferred another year the in creased value of really will be from twenty five to fifty per contain iralu values es will advance relatively with the growth of the city and it is probable that suitable site would in in two or three years ears cost one hundred per more than it will during the present year the abisia for this conclusion is is found in in the following facts and figures the asse Feed valuation of property in ogden during the four years from 1886 to 1849 1889 wai was ASSESSED VALUATION 1888 1886 1887 2 1888 1889 these figures show that in one yen property ant trebled in value from values ascend to tg 3 making a stride of in twelve months sheild this ratio of increase continue conti noe it is not datil cult to foretell large indrea es in in value from iron vear year to year thorn P i added ad led to I 1 tl te fa fact ct that the city now has a cipu lation of 2000 having doubled in two years and that the buildings under contract con trac tor for 1890 are to cost all fold told fa the inference is ie that Odenis 0 den is feeling a h althy boom that will send her lee up to the 40 or 50 mark in two to or three years duri dari aig 9 1889 the cew new buildings erect d in the tile city ct about these facts and figures would seem to need no comm comment nt they ought to I 1 peak for themselves to congress fifth that although the proper persons son in official life at dieon are in possession of memorials presen ted by postmaster kimball and aher her government official officials relating to pa public alic buildings at oden ogden yet vet ev events ants have in arched a eu baet abet since their transmission to lie the national capitol that they hould be regarded as of greater forceno force today to day that thil it ogden 13 not the ogden oad n of a few years ago when hen federal provisions for a good healthy town were all that Ili atnas was needed but a great railroad financial and commercial center requiring turing large and generously equips rea government buildings and first clasi service in the several official departments that tins this last is is nat n t possible po sible with i ali the present mean provisions provi eions br for the government service in this city is keenly felt by those who lire live hero here and is remarked even by the transient guest within our gates f e sixth ta 1 e n merits bet ter treat treatment meni in regard to federal heir than has been extended in the past
